    plaster edge cracking

Apply PVA too the masonary (brick, block) and leave to dry. Give it a quick second coat let it go tacky then plaster away. You are trying to cure suction, in other words, the dry masonary sucking all the water out of the plaster before it has time to cure thus causing the plaster to shrink...

Hi all. Yes i know you cant ask people to do jobs or expect people to give an exact price without seeing the job but here goes anyway. I usualy only get involved with fitting kitchens, bathrooms and fitted wardrobes, however i have recently been doing up a 200 year old cottage for a guy who...

    new or old footings

Woody, Just as a matter of interest, I looked at my deeds a few year's back because we were building an extension and conservatory. We have privet hedges outlining the borders. When i looked at my deeds (I live in a semi) the red line went through the house separating the two then...

plastering a wall - plaster or dry line

You cant beat Float & Set no comparison realy. Drylining will be cheaper and quicker and will dry faster allowing you to decorate. Go the good old fashioned route and get a good plasterer to do it properly for you.

Best way to plaster this partition wall?

I also like traditional plastering BUT sometimes if it has gone as far as that then I would board. If that is a stud wall (think it is) then maybe this is the time to add a little rockwool for both sound and thermal insulation whilest you are at it.

overboarding a ceiling and around a window question

Yes, do the ceilling first, ensure the wall board is as tight against the ceilling you can to prevent thermal breach. No dont fill the cavity (you can get DP closures if you have a full opening 3" or 4") board over if its only a slither. and DONT remove the DPM if there is one fitted...

Skim over woodchip wallpaper with emulsion paint?

Your better off masona. This time, plaster the new board and dont stick the wall paper direct to the plasterboard mate :D

    plaster skim thickness

Do as clout says. To be honest, i usually use 12mm plasterboard to form arches. Saves all the hassle, i hate arch formers.

    plaster around front door

Tinker, If that is the case and the installer DOESNT know how to address this problem, then i would tell them not to bother. In order to do this you simply apply a packer that sits on the frame (hindge side) this gives adequate clearence and at the same time takes up the gap created...

    plaster around front door

I'm a little lost here ? When you say knock off the plaster/artex by 40mm, do you mean the external render ? I dont understand that you need to hack off 40mm internally then once door fitted, bridge the cavity/insulation back to the exposed external bricks ? maybe its just me ...

    New double garage lavelling Problem

Ian, don't worry about the odd few MM. If there was 12" difference then that would pose problems. even a good few inches out of parallel over 26 feet wouldn't really be noticable.

    New double garage lavelling Problem

Ian, 6mm over 26ft is nothing to worry about. In fact thats pretty damb impressive mate. As noseall says, main concern is that the walls are parallel with each other, otherwise the tiles would look rather odd once the roof had been cut. If you are using trusses and your walls were not...

    New double garage lavelling Problem

If you look at your spirit level it will have an accuracy printed on it. Good quality ones (stabilia) usually are acurate to 0.5mm to the meter. Cheap(stanley and draper) are 1.0mm to the meter. If i have read correctly what you are saying the total run is 19 feet around 6 meters. If...
