Thanks - I've decided to use concrete blocks, the thermalite can be saved for something else!

I'm thinking of cladding with decorative stone, something like this, but would prefer something with smaller sections (I think these are 40cm wide) to cope with the curvature of the wall...

I like the batton option, this is probably cheaper and will cover the unneeded hole.

Rainwater and waste that's collected via a hopper. I'm going to route the waste directly into soil pipe. The rainwater could easily divert into another gutter (or even via stack into soil).
