Rules when paying by day rate

Woody surely what you're referring to is piece rate pay, not daily or hourly rate. If someone is on a daily rate then they work a day irrespective of how fast or slow they work (and thats the problem with day rates). If a certain quantifiable amount of progress is expected to trigger the pay...

Jumpax in kitchen with vinyl tiles&heating

On advice from here (which seems good) I've had a jumpax style floor delivered for my kitchen. It's not actually Jumpax it's HeatPak which is the same thing but with a separate depron insulation layer and some carbon heating elements for uncovered areas of the kitchen. The floor will be covered...

    Attaching composite / quartz worktops

Does anyone know how this type of worktop is attached to the units below? I'm planning on having one in my new kitchen but in one spot I'm going to have to build a bit of support for it and I want to get it right.

Surely even a builder knows this is not right?

    It's kinda snazzy though ;)

New internal bathroom wall - advice needed please.

If you are plasterboarding your guess for plaster is a bit on the thick side I'd say - more like 2-4mm. Why not build a stud wall?

Safe to block part of air brick?

Houses of that era were built with underfloor vents from day one to avoid damp problems. The OP may have a new airbrick but its probably in the spot of an existing vent.

Fitting a new bathroom light - no earth

You could try digging around in the ceiling there could well be a junction box up there with an earth in it, had to do this recently, ended up cutting a bit of the ceiling away to gain access to the JB but it was covered by the new light fitting.

    dried blood stain

Nope looks logical to me. Dead thread revived with an answer. Someone (JohnD) says "too late" someone new (Udhi) finds the thread and says no its not because the answer is relevant to a problem they have.

    Old sockets

Sorry I should have said replacement fitting: i.e. change say a rose and pendant to a 4 spot Halogen jobbie? it's hardly like for like. Going further if my electrician has put a circuit in place for a hob (currently I have a loose wire taped up and switched off at CU and the isolating switch...

    7.5kW -> 13A flex = ?

So just how much current can a ratty old bit of flex carry? Went to put a new replacement solenoid in a relatives shower that has been installed for at least 15 years. Whoever ran the cable didn't leave it long enough and its been extended inside the shower to reach the proper connectors. Not...

    Old sockets

OK now I'm confused. Does that mean I can change a socket plate in my kitchen? put a new kitchen light up? change a bathroom fan?

Kitchen sink - pipe lengths & drops etc

I've moved my exisiting kitchen sink and plumbed it in with 40mm pipe with a run length of just under 4m, the vertical drop between the bottom of the sink and the point where it enters the soil stack is around 22cm (about 10cm over the actual pipe run). The sink seems to work fine but when I...

    Electric cooker connection

If the horizontal run of the cable is behind cabinets and/or under the worktop could you not save effort and run it on the surface?

Safe to block part of air brick?

Not an expert but from what I understand of houses of that sort of age you'll just have earth below your ground floor, and those vents are supposed to ensure the area underneath the floorboards stays nice and dry and not for venting air into the room. Sounds like yours may be one row of bricks...

Is this a bayonet cooker connection?

Not really sure what a bayonet connection looks like - I'm about to put new flooring down as part of the ongoing new kitchen and the cooker (not hob) is in my way. If it's a bayonet type I understand I can just disconnect it and move the blasted old cooker, if its a screw in type I'll need to...
