Recent new bathroom - sealant already mouldy

We had a bedroom converted into a bathroom about 5 months ago, professionally done by a local firm. The sealant around the bath is already going mouldy, but only in the wettest part where the shower frequently wets it. The mould is beneath/inside the sealant, so we can't just clean it off. The...

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

That would make sense given it happened immediately after depressurising/refilling, and some of the noises it was making (kettling?). Is it likely to resolve itself when I drop the system again and bleed the rads once refilled? Or is it a job for a pro?

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

Currently just capped at the valves where I've removed a couple of rads. Just tried shutting the isolating valves, first flow, then return, got HW both times. Then tried with both valves shut, worked fine. Wondering if it makes any difference closing the isolating valves before draining the...

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

Haven't had any issues with either CH or HW. Unless it's a new problem that's occurred recently. Don't think the heating has been on in a couple of months. Guess I'll find out once I've finished putting in new rads and pipework

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

Flow pipe, comes down the rear of the boiler and then a couple of 90 degree bends up into it. It drops down to a 15mm run below, which feeds a nearby rad, this is a later addition.

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

I've capped off the pipes for now, opened the F/R levers and refilled the system. Seems to be working OK after a reset. Strange that it doesn't seem to like me isolating flow and return?

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

Thanks. Yes, according to that diagram, I've closed 12 - Heating Return and 16 - Heating Flow.

    Boiler overheating after isolating F/R?

Main Combi Eco 30 boiler. I have some work planned changing radiators and pipework, so decided to drain the central heating system down. Could take me some time to finish the work and we need hot water in the meantime, so I decided to move the selector to hot water only and isolate flow and...

    Patio pattern generator?

I am recycling an Indian Sandstone patio that has already been lifted, approx. 48m2 of four different flag sizes. Does anybody know of a generator that would allow me to input my surface area, plus the number of each individual flag sizes, in order to generate a suitable random pattern? The...

Re-using slabs with old cement on them

All sorted, turns out the worst was in the photo and the rest were relatively smooth and not too much cement to contend with.

Re-using slabs with old cement on them

Somebody local to us is having a new patio done and has about 50m2 indian sandstone to lift and dispose of. I am planning to use the lot for a raised patio in my garden, but many of them are coming up with a thick layer of cement and sub base stuck to them. Removing this seems like it would be...

Interceptor trap rodding hole cap replacement

Just wanted to pass on my thanks for this suggestion. Finally got around to plugging the hole yesterday as per your suggestion. I'd been doing some work in a bedroom with a window nearest the stack vent and it was a warm day so the window was wide open. I kept getting a waft of sewer gas in the...

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

Little update to the saga. It turns out the black cable isn't connected at the CU as I first thought. Rather, there are two 2.5mm ring legs as you might expect. For some reason, one leg goes directly to a junction box under the landing. Here, the leg continues beneath the floorboards as the...

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

The 6mm would be running from the CU to a 2G 2P socket. I’m pretty sure the 6mm will just about fit into one gang and the ring would then continue in 2.5mm from the second gang. Assuming this is OK, I’m not going to unbalance anything and cause the RCD to trip am I?

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

Just had an idea that will potentially make life easier if feasible. There is a disused 6mm T&E shower cable running nearby, recently disconnected from the CU, but still accessible. It would be easy enough for me to reroute this to replace the old black cable leg of the ring main. Any issues...

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

Definitely a possibility, but doesn't look any more difficult than other cables which have been replaced. I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands now. I know deep down it needs ripping out. But on the other hand it's a lot of aggro for a cable that appears to be in excellent condition.

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

I plan to replace it as the back box itself is a tad loose despite me tightening up. New holes/rawl plugs should do the trick. Should get an earth terminal then. It doesn't appear to be feeding another socket; I suspect one side is going into a hidden junction box as there are no black cables in...

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

I have had a closer look at the socket served by the old cable. Photos attached as I found it. Apart from being dusty, the insulation is in better condition than I expected. The sleeving is still soft and pliable, not disintegrating at all. I have since sleeved and tidied up the bare earth...

Old black cable - possibly rubber?

In advance of extending the upstairs ring main in my 1930's house, I have pulled up some floor boards to see what the state of play is. To my surprise, it looks like one side of the ring main at the CU is possibly old black rubber cable? It is stamped "250 VOLTS B.S.S.7 MADE IN ENGLAND". I found...

    Adding a radiator - tee off 22mm F&R with 22 or 15mm?

I have a garage conversion and would like to install a radiator in there. The house has a 30kW Main Eco combi boiler fitted in the kitchen. There are 22mm flow and return pipes running the length of the house with all of the rads teeing into them in 15mm. The easiest way I can see to connect...
