    Pushfit

And I believe the pressfit tools are well over £1,000 each.

    Help needed opening shower bar

Showerdoc.com are brilliant at identifying make and model from pictures. I have a similar-looking though not identical model which most certainly sprays water everywhere if you remove the temperature control without isolating the flow. Not sure about the flow control - also on the left on my...

Running ethernet cable along external walls

You don't need conduit or (FFS) hose pipe. Ten years ago in my previous house I ran some 30 metres of external-grade Cat 6 cable round the outside walls "bare" using ordinary cable clips hammered into the mortar between brick courses and it was fine when I left some five years later. My records...

Thinking of installing a marine boat toilet

Anyone who has spent any time in government service (25 years in my case) knows that, with the exception of a few highly centralised and authoritarian states, governments in general are far too large, unwieldy, compartmentalised and in parts incompetent to conspire effectively to organise...

What testing equipment does an electrician need

I understand the point about not wanting second-hand kit. However some years ago, thinking of a possible career change, I bought a suite of supposedly second-hand test instruments off eBay. One was a Robin KMP3075DL continuity and insulation tester for about £100 which turned out to be...

wood cutting circular disk for mini angle grinder wanted

I have used one of those Bosch discs on a small angle grinder, with extreme care, running it along the floor to cut 15mm or so off the bottom of a wooden door before laying some new flooring on which it would otherwise snag. I didn't remove the door and use a circular saw on this occasion...

External door with a knob cylinder

Tools are readily available to allow operating of an internal thumbturn from outside, for example using a letterbox. Eg see . I won't have thumbturns on external doors in my house; just always make sure there is a set of keys not too far from the door (but obviously too far for a scumbag, tooled...

Running multiple cables through brick wall

I ran a long length of (IIRC) Cat5e cable round the outside of my last house, just using silicone or acrylic sealant around the exit hole. Just made a cable-sized hole; no conduit or anything (but solid not cavity wall). Of course that meant I couldn't use a cable with a pre-fitted plug, or...

    North London DIY supplies: recommendations

I've owned and bashed houses in North London since 1989. Was 30 years in N6, now in N14. Others might appreciate a few of my recommendations below. I have obviously not bothered with the sheds, Screwfixes or Toolstations, which are all around, or my favourite online sources. These are mostly...

    Trying to balance CH system

Such rads are inherently poor - not just my DIY opinion but also that of a great Gas Safe engineer/plumbing guy whose services I have used for nearly 20 years. I replaced two in my house last year with ordinary horizontal Type 22s with an excellent increase in heat output, for no more fuel used.

I have a Leaking BathTap, What Valve

Can't help directly but https://www.showerdoc.com/ in Edinburgh offer to identify showers from photos and may be able to help.

Trouble with balancing after following how-to.

PS have also found balancing very hard, eg one existing rad that used to get toasty very quickly is now very slow to heat, despite all my efforts.

Trouble with balancing after following how-to.

The three downstairs rads in the house I bought in 2019 were all that type; very poor heat output. In summer 2022 I replaced two with ordinary horizontal Type 22s from Screwfix and last winter had much better heating, though still using 100-140 kWh of gas per day in the coldest periods (4-bed...

    Adding socket and FCU

Not an electrical point as such, but you may wish to consider whether it is wise to install a TV above a fire. It could damage the TV. Also - another an unrelated point - I see countless wall-mounted TVs put far too high for comfortable viewing for someone sitting across an average room on a...

    Brush size & technique

I recently refreshed some interior woodwork painted 3-4 years ago with Leyland Trade Eggshell, using the same paint again. This time I tried it with 10% propylene glycol, only to be disappointed that it needed fully three coats for a good finish (and this was white over identical white). I'll...

    Best paint for skirting boards

    Speeding up interior woodwork painting

80 grit would be a bit coarse for my taste. I usually use120 on interior woodwork.
