    Ultion lock failure

I had a single Ultion Eurocylinder in a door and was planning to get several more, keyed alike, for other doors around the house. The price put me off, as well as the unfriendly ordering process (you can't just order online even if you've registered your ownership details) and the incompetence...

    Column radiators

Not a direct reply but the house I bought in 2019 had three column radiators. All useless. Last year I replaced two with ordinary horizontal rads and spent last winter much warmer and having used less gas. Only thing stopping me replacing the third is that it's on a plasterboard wall with...

Partial burial of radiator pipes - thoughts?

In both my house and my girlfriend's flat I have fitted lengths of 34x34mm (nominal) PAR or PSE above offending pipework or cabling, then fitted new skirting onto that. (Hers is a local authority rental, in which messing with piping or electrical trunking, of which there is quite a lot, is not...

    "Planed" timber

I can echo what others have said about timber from the likes of B&Q. Where are you based? I have a couple of North London recommendations, if any use.

    Outdoor Lights -- Timer

I have a couple of dusk-to-dawn LED lights, one inside the house and one outside my front door, as well as a light on a timer inside in another location. I understand the point about it being theoretically better to have random periods of lighting during dark hours but, realistically, how many...

carpet cleaning: Machine hire or Cleaning pro?

Forgot to say that the Vax cleaner sucks back up so much liquid that the carpet can be walked on again almost immediately.

carpet cleaning: Machine hire or Cleaning pro?

When I moved four years ago into a house with four rooms, one landing and two staircases carpeted, I bought - direct from the makers - a Vax Platinum Power Max cleaner, heavily influenced by Which? magazine rating it higher then the best (Rug Doctor) hire-able machines, and by the cost and...

Curved stone staircase, runner or paint

I have a staircase not unlike your own, but timber not stone, currently fully carpeted. I want to paint the edges and have a stair runner, but a bit of research suggests a 66-year-old DIYer, experienced but doing it for the first time, is unlikely to produce good results. This is not least...

    Move macerator pipes

What prevents you running the whole thing with just a slight fall from start to finish? Aesthetics? Or is there something like a door in the way?

Copper flashing to reduce moss and mold?

I have just fitted a 150mm-wide self-adhesive copper strip to the ridge of my garden room's pitched roof, 5 metres wide, for eventual demossification purposes, having twice sprayed the roof with strong acetic acid then when several days later dry, laboriously scraped off the dead moss. The roof...

Third coat of satin over 2 coats of gloss?

So there are; they've come a long way! Let us know how you get on please.

What is the paint colour I'm looking for?!

I like sage green and painted my front door and some other external wooden parts of my newly-bought house four years ago with Dulux Weathershield Fresh Sage. I recoated some parts this year though they didn't really need it - including some planters made from ordinary non-treated CLS that have...

    Virgin Media (cable re-route)

I was dumb enough to have Virgin Media supply my last house. A couple of large, cheerful individuals turned up from their Tottenham depot to install and managed (a) to create major spalling on the outside brickwork after drilling through from inside as quickly as possible and (b) to leave the...

    Copper pipe finishing.

I like shiny copper too! I just install, leave shiny and if necessary clean up with fine wire wool when it dulls. Let us know if you find a suitable lacquer/varnish.

Third coat of satin over 2 coats of gloss?

And in respect of the comment from DiyNutJob, Bedec barn paint (again IIRC) can go happily over almost anything. There are different finishes available and I've only used satin.

Third coat of satin over 2 coats of gloss?

Some wonderful roofing contactors I've used for 20 years alerted me to Bedec barn paint. I'm a fan. For example, I used the black version on some new woodwork on the south-facing front of my house four years ago and it's as good as new. Also needs no primer and very little other prep. But IIRC...

    Extra support for steel bath?

Couldn't you knock up a sturdy wooden support with legs either side of the pipes? If there's no room to manoeuvre such a thing into place once made up, make it in kit form with pegs or short screws on top of the legs to locate into holes in the centre (top) piece. If the legs are made from...

Best External Wood Paint - Garden Building

I'm not entirely sure what you mean "as thick as semiskimmed" but I used Owatrol with Sikkens Satura partly because the latter - which is oil-based - was quite thick and Owatrol made it easier to apply. Of course it also made the Satura go further but given the price of the Owatrol - indeed the...

Does Size Of The Front Door Matter

I have an 800mm front door but the 1080mm wide sliding rear glass door with step-free access from the road has been invaluable for bringing in or taking out large pieces of furniture and large appliances. Even with sub-800mm internal doors, you might find a slightly wider front door useful...

    Plywood base for worktop.

As foxhole has said, 9mm ply sounds far too thin. Also bear in mind that porcelain tiles are heavy, so that's quite a load even before you start tenderising steaks on the worktop.
