    Thank Goodness!

I do risk assessments for all but the regular mundane jobs that have been covered by a general RA. I work for a very large organisation which sees H&S as a very important part of company image and damage limitation. Our bonus is affected negatively for reportable injuries and positively for...

    Thank Goodness!

Ive spent half an hour watching a video about how to undo a nut after some burk bashed there head with a spanner when a nut unexpectantly came loose. Actually that should read "nuts come loose when you loosen them" or do they? :| The best one, was having our hammers taken away from us just...

Help - question about a still damp screeded floor

You can still do a pressure test to see if you have a split pipe. You can hire them. Its normal for a pressure test to be carried out before the screed is layed. To help dry out the screed open the windows and doors to get a draft running across it.

Wetroom shower screen and rope light

Dont I know it. It takes 2 days to recover after moving it. I bought it because the light from the LEDs would hit a larger edge, its strong enough to stop a bus even though it wont have end support and it only cost me £16 on ebay!!

    Home brew Self levelling

You can make the compound go further by adding builders sand. I have used this succesfully and doubled the coverage. As for the deeper parts you would need someone to verify this but using something called slurry would do it. I think its a 2:1 cement sand mix. not tried it only read about...

Wetroom shower screen and rope light

Im going to fit a 2m x 1.2mx 20mm shower screen into a tanked wetroom. Can anyone see a problem with not using glazing strips. I cant see much point to them and intend to silicon the glass into a chase cut into the wall and rest on the screed . I can make sure everythings square and will...

    sawing mdf

My workmate is 4" shorter too. I was checking out a very old 3 phase isolator and found it had a lot of metal grinding dust. So, as you do, I blew in it to clear it out, the dust allowed an arc and it blew up in face. Luckily I only went blind............for 2 minutes and then had arc eye for...

Any tips/advice on lifting heavy lintels up into place?

Just get the steels 6" off the ground and the gennie slides under. Problems to think about: can you the lift in the middle of the steel for balance, the front wheels may stick out too far forward and hit a wall.

    Thermostat envy

I've just fitted heatmiser PRT/HW. Its a 3 wire so no need for batteries. It will also control the hot water if wires can be fed to it. Its currently wired into the old time controller which is set to constant but the old controller can be thrown at a later time. Best of all for some reason on...

Utility space in detached garage/storage building...advice?

Not sure if youve thought this through. The water in the pipe will freeze in the winter and depending on the type of dryer you have, it may not heat up enough to be of any use. If its like my old one it draws in outside air, heats that up and passes it through the dryer.

    Roof insulation

As you are using breathable felt you dont need an air gap so unvented is fine. If you put Celotex under it can be taped up and used as the vapour barrier instead of fitting a seperate VB. "The old way"? as long as it does the job. The two questions I would ask myself are, is the head...

What do I clad a stud wall for a shower with?

I've used Aquapanel (cheap enough on the net) as my previous house had standard wall board and it rotted. Cracks in grout are not water proof as I found out to my peril but it did take about 8 years to totally fail. Once the board was wet it flexed and swelled and caused the grout to crack even...

    Roof insulation

I put in 100mm between and 50mm under just in case BC objected too much with me having more glass than the 25% floor area etc. It sounds a bit like yours and the drawings that were passed are for 25mm under. You could always stick another layer under what you've got if you have to.

    Handrail diameter

Why? So the hand rails don't 'overtake' the the space and bring the open gap down below 600mm. The stairs are handmade oak of an unsual design and I dont what a couple of handrails detracting from the look of a side lit masterpiece of modern design. Are all the people using the handrail...
