How do I find a mysterious leak from a cistern/pan?

How do you know this? I've had similar symptoms from condensation or from connection to bottom of cistern not being quite tight enough.

is there any other types of m.d.f?

Mostly OK. MDF actually contains urea formaldehyde. Google for MDF and formaldehyde for much more information. But in relation to the ant sting theory - be very careful not to assume that a compound has the characteristics of any of the parts that make it up. Otherwise none of us would be...

Magiglo Elite ME16T natural gas fire pops off

Good thinking curlydon. Only other appliance is the CH boiler. There is no correlation between boiler activity and the fire misbehaving.

Magiglo Elite ME16T natural gas fire pops off

No. The pilot is normal almost all the time. Just sometimes when the fire has been on for a long time - like three or four hours - it gets a bit low. If I re-start immediately the pilot will be OK except when turned up full. If I leave it 5-10 minutes it will be fine. Lurker - thanks for...

Magiglo Elite ME16T natural gas fire pops off

OD'd on cynicism, but that's how it feels. If all else fails, I'll wait for the annual CORGI on the main boiler. Could be worse. Could be waiting for the ntl man :x :x :x

Magiglo Elite ME16T natural gas fire pops off

???? You have to be joking. I wasn't actually going to work on the gas appliance of course. What I am looking for is some suggestion as to why my gas fire might be behaving like this. Like I said, I can call the guy back. But right now I'm balancing a day at home feeling irritated against...

Magiglo Elite ME16T natural gas fire pops off

err - pun spotted thanks (though probably not without the big letters). If necessary I will call back the installer - it's about six months in, but was OK at first. What would be really HELPFUL would be suggestions for anything simple I could do to avoid wasting a day waiting for a gasman who...

Magiglo Elite ME16T natural gas fire pops off

It works fine almost all the time. But sometimes, unpredictably, after working OK for several hours it pops itself off. It will light up again fine, but when turned up full the pilot is not really strong enough to keep the thermocouple glowing. Works OK if turned down a little. Is there...

    help with shower

Before I volunteer to help you with your shower I would need to know you a lot better - a photograph would be most helpful. And how often would you be wanting this kind of service? Every day, or just on special occasions? If the latter, would you have showered yourself in between?

red light on pull cord switch

Just to be clear: I'm not sure if the light is actually moving or is it only pulsating or perhaps both? If the red plastic thing in the switch physically moves when you pull the string then you probably have a defective switch - see other replies. If the light pulsates/ flickers/ appears to...

red light on pull cord switch

The light moves sideways? Is it really a light? Or is it a physical indicator with alternate red and white quadrants?

    porchlight

It's possible that the old lamp would require an earth connection if bought new (you suggest repainting it so it's probably metal). So your old lamp repainted will be just as hazardous, or not, as the new lamp.

How to cope with thick nasty old paint on woodwork/doors

Interesting. Only had a door done once, and assumed the gaps had already been there under the century of paint. Other bits I have bought already stripped have been OK - for painting again.

How to cope with thick nasty old paint on woodwork/doors

If you can be really really patient, a hot-air gun will do the job just as well, with less risk of burning the house down and, I think, less risk to health. But you need to go at it very gently and make sure the paint is nicely soft before trying to peel it off. I don't have the patience. The...

How to cope with thick nasty old paint on woodwork/doors

darksquid Please don't rip out your original wood. You will come to love it. Burning is by far the most efficient way to get the paint off. With that many layers of old paint it should come off really well. Modern paints don't seem to be so ready to come off with heat, but if your bottom...

    Emulsion as undercoat

I get paint and really good advice from a small trade paint shop. There are loads of them around. They'll mix ANY colour you want from any of the big names and be cheaper. Mine has really good advice on general paint problems, is pretty smart on colour advice, ,delivers free, is really good...

    pads v rollers!?

Nobody suggesting a brush then? A good quality brush can come close to the speed of a roller in a not-too-big room. You get a different texture of surface. But on ceilings - roller every time - on the end of a long pole so that any spray is not on me. Works well when the ceilings are 10 feet up.

    Ink on beanie tush tag

If it's not water soluble, nail varnish remover often works. But you do need to be careful that it won't dissolve the fabric or othewise damage it. The challenge always is to avoid simply spreading the ink. It has this annoying tendency to spread from a spot to a patch as soon as it gets the...
