    Property earth wire

How would your flat affect the whole property? How does the fitment of an 'earth' wire affect this? The cable can be clipped externally. Its an earth.

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

I think he/she is being obtuse because they can be. The sales tactic is good, get in the door then ramp the prices right up. Sounds similar to a large national UPVC window/door company. I would expect to pay an electrician (labour) £70 for the first hour, then £60 for each subsequent hour...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

I think you are forgetting that he/she will already be on site. Therefore I expect all them things have already been included into the £300 price.

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

The job requires 5mtrs of 10mm earth, several cable clips and 2 earth clamps - certainly not £100 worth of work there. Parts ~ £8 (5 mtrs of cable, 2 earth clamps) 20mins work ~ £35 I shall fit the 10mm earth to the water/gas and terminate it into the earth block on the cut-out with...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

I have had a reply from the £300 guy. £300 becomes £400 if the earthing needs sorted. How much is 6mtrs of 10mm Earth, a box of clips and 2x earth clamps.. ~ ;)

    Total mystery with 10.5kW shower

Not exactly knowing the operation of the shower, i could guess that water flow on expensive showers remains the same, and its the heater that is switched in/out. Therefore, on a High Setting, with the temperature turned to the Max you could feel 10.5Kw, however on Medium and 1/2 way you might...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

This consumer unit is in the corner base unit of a kitchen cupboard. Not exactly the best place to be. I will need to remove the worktop/base units to allow access as i certainly would not want to be working inside a cupboard. Mrs FTB hates the kitchen tiles, so hopefully they will go out...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

Thats exactly it John, An old 4-way Wylex board in a house which sold for £155,000 in 2006. Looks like the cash went elsewhere. The board has 1x lighting (5A), 1x sockets (30A), 1x cooker (30A), 1x immersion heater (20A) wylex insertable MCB. I was impressed that the cooker socket has a...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

I hope the £300 guy does so before, otherwise that could be quite embarrasing when the RCD constantly trips. One area which may or may not be borderline, is the 11 lighting points (inc bathroom fans) that are supplied in 1.0 mm T&E and are on a 5amp Wylex MCB. I imagine with the...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

Supply is PME, therefore 10mm Earth was suitable at 16th Edition, and i assume from your answer that is acceptable. I need to attain if the £300 just includes the installation of the new consumer unt, and the testing of the RCD etc. I would naturally assume that any other testing apart from...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

I do wonder what brand the £300 man is using, and how many ways the board will have. I suspect there is a "Subject to T&C" next to it. As for me, i may well leave them to replace the board, then i can run some 10mm Earth to the Gas/Water. Naturally assuming the 17th Edition is still 10mm...

    DIY Consumer Unit Change

Walking through B&Q, I spotted a handful of Consumer Units on display with a nice offer on them, got me thinking.... why would you do a DIY consumer unit fitment? I assume it will be certainly notifiable.. The plan... change an old 4 Wylex Brown Fuse Wire Board, with a nice new 17th...

    Absolutely Shocking...

Unfortunately there are bigger things that need attention than a full re-wire. Basically, we are not too fussed about bring the house up to 17th edition, with multiple RCDs in a consumer unit. Instead, sockets, cooker on the RCD side, lights on the unprotected side. If we went with no...

    Absolutely Shocking...

Made an offer on a house, to find that it is a 5 bedroom house with the old Wylex insertable MCB type of consumer unit. Its only 4 way, which seems quite weird. 1x Lighting, 1x Immersion Heater which shares itself with the Power Shower Pump, 2x Socket circuits. The garage is run from a...

    Wages

I was "brought up" by a electrical firm via a YTS scheme. Things were going well until I found out what others were being paid & what they were charging for me. I always felt that I owed the company as they had taught me a trade. I always found asking for a pay rise hard, as my boss would...

    Central Heating - Additive

The system is a Combi Boiler with No Filter. Suspect DHW Heat Exchanger is slightly blocked as had to reduce the flow to bring the temp back up. Its plumbed with 20mm & 15mm, so just something to work on that really...instead of replacing it.
