Changing to MCB's, why a bigger rating?

When circuits are updated, why are the circuits increased in rating. 30amp fuse >32amp breaker 5amp fuse > 6amp breaker 15amp fuse > 16amp breaker Surely this has now given the cable more chance to heat up in the event of a fault?

Plug-in MCB's, are there other options?

Re-working an old CU. It can be upgraded using plug-mcb's but this has no earth fault protection, right? I know best thing is a change to an all singing new consumer unit, but thats far too adventurous for me. Do anyone do "plug-in" RCBO or RCCB devices that would handle earth fault as well as...

    Design software for electricians

Does anyone use calculation software based on BS 7671, like the design software here: http://www.amtech-power.co.uk/product_30.htm Do you not use it because its another expense, or you are quick enough to finger through the book itself? Yes I know PDA or laptop can get a flat battery! Cheers

    Handling SWA

Whats the best way to handle SWA going through exterior wall. Its 6mm 3 core SWA and of course more stiff than T&E 6mm. Its running from underground trench (conduit) up the exterior wall, through hole and swept round to a 2wCU/DP isolator. Every cable has a radius limit, so how would you...

    OIL boiler/burner pump question

It was failing before service, thought it was dirty oil but everything clean now! Solenoid does get warm. I have a voltage tester, anywhere to test the solenoid?

    OIL boiler/burner pump question

Could it be the solenoid failing , going by the fault I have? Maybe swap this by itself, that might work?

    OIL boiler/burner pump question

I have a problem with my EOGB oil burner, its just been serviced and cuts out after approx 3 mins whilst running. It has two new filters, new nozzle, new flexible oil line. Oil pressure gets up to what I set it at (100psi on Danfoss BFP 21 R5) and stays constant. Could it be the solenoid...
