Gah! Diet Coke in the laptop!

You can wash and dry any electronic circuit boards. They will work OK for a time (maybe minutes, maybe years) and then die. The water (or coke) gets into the capacitors and they slowly die, usually resulting in severe electronic oscillation and killing the power supply.

    Dead Dell Laptop

One for any boffins on here. Dell laptop suddenly died never to go again. Tried replacing hard drive (from identical Dell)-no joy. Tried new battery - still no joy. Screen gives a quick flash on attempted power up. So thoughts are possibly power supply or processor. Would appreciate any...

    Concrete Pond Base Construction

How you construct it is up to you, personally I would do the slab first and build the walls after. Leave the whole structure for a while to settle and then fibreglass it, just painted it will leak and fibreglass can be repaired.

Am I daft to contemplate doing this myself?

You will need at minimum neighbour consultation and possibly full planning permission. The garage wall that will become your house wall will need an extra skin and insulation and maybe new foundations. I would suggest that you employ an architectural technician to do your drawings and liaise...

Severn Trent building close to agreement

As FMT says, ask them. I would suggest that you do a cctv survey prior to building to show the existing condition so you are not blamed for existing damage.

    Split neutral

Thanks John, for clarifying that point, perhaps not worded well. Certainly 240v PD can kill, but 440v is much more likely not to give a second chance.

    Split neutral

It's normally OK as long as the socket outlets are separated by at least spread arms, as there will be 440v across the lives on separate phases. The neutral will never carry more current than the highest current on one phase.

Any idea what these garden cables are for?

It could be early closed circuit TV cable - the twisted pair carry the signal and the other 2 the power. I have seen similar in early rediffusion type systems for public address and CCTV in factories, but never underground.

    Plumbing Merchants

I find BES good. Seem to have most things in stock and cheaper than local. Normally next day delivery.

    22mm flooring chipbard

Always a problem with imperial sheets and metric joist spacing. Set the joists at 16" rather than 400mm, starting with the second joist in 16" from the wall. Joints will fall on the joists. (most sheet materials are still 8ft (2440mm not 2400mm). Even if they are 2400 they will fit joists at...

    Big gaps around door frame.

I agree with JohnD. Fix a wide architrave around the door to cover the gap and paint it.

    Removing old 1970's tile adhesive.

Has anyone any idea how to remove the adhesive left behind after removing old 1970's thermoplastic tiles from a concrete floor.

I believe that internal and external corner copings are available for most profiles.

    Vaccinations

The pet insurance companies insist on yearly vaccinations, no vaccination = no insurance cover.

How to construct top of wooden units?

Try this company. http://meyertimber.com/ I cannot say where they deliver or whether they will cut to size. I bought Oak faced ply from them via my local builders merchants, but I did have a full 8 x4 sheet.

    trimming concrete block to 40mm

I would think it easier to cut a course of bricks to 40mm, or use two courses of brick slips.

    moving drains and pipes

Your first thing is to open the manhole. If it carries water from your neighbours property as well as yours it belongs to the local water authority. You should contact them for build over permission. If it just carries your waste it may be possible to move it down stream away from your...

    Lintel advice

I think you will find that the wall plate carrying the roof is on the inner skin of the cavity wall. In saying that, it makes little difference to the minimal loading and the lintel mentioned in the previous reply will be OK. As far as support is concerned, unless the blocks are stuck together...
