    Garage Self Build

They are impressive beasts although working in servo hydraulics their control seems very crude compared to what i'm used to! (link here if you're curious what i'm upto when i'm not laying blocks! ) From my experience hydraulics always win when something gets in the way.

    Roof Tile Bedding mortar

Thanks again. I will have some help although they are not a roofer either but they are in the building trade. What's the benefit of adding the sharp sand? It's cheap enough to get a few 25kg bags if required. Photo showing build so far, all self built with help from friend's and family

    Roof Tile Bedding mortar

Great thanks for your help. You say not less than 3 to 1 what is the ideal mix? Tiles are Marley Mendip anthracite smooth if that makes any difference.

    Roof Tile Bedding mortar

Hi All, Can you use standard building sand and cement for bedding roofing tiles? Most of the pre-mixes seem to be 3 to 1 Sand Cement

    Garage Self Build

Progress update, walls are going up slowly. Did consider paying someone to throw the blockwork up but I had quotes for between £2-4k for labour only for approx 1000 blocks Planning permission is really dragging its heels with an original deadline of the 22nd of October we have settled on the...

    Wiring a Contactor

Hi SimonH2, Upon further investigation the service engineer believe the output / load cable from the SSR to the heaters was loss which overtime generated significant heat slowly degrading the cable to the point of failure. At the point of the failure the resultant heat from the arc as the cable...

    Wiring a Contactor

Not entirely relevant to the post, but we've just had an SSR fail at work, a 100amp SSR protected by a 160amp fuse... The cables next to it are the remains of the supply cables My role isn't electrical I just use the facility

    Wiring a Contactor

Hi I only work it out to be 3 modules, 1 20amp MCB, 1 20 Amp Contactor and 1 3 amp MCB Also found out from the manufacturer the contactor is rated to 2,000,000 cycles (24hrs x 60 mins = 1440 minutes a day, say it switched off and on every 10 minutes (unlikely) that would be 144 cycles a day...

    Wiring a Contactor

Great thanks, I will try and contact them and find out what sort of duty cycle they are designed for. I'd prefer to use a standard heating controller as i'd like to use the same brand of smart thermostat I use for my boiler in the house. In terms of actual wiring could anyone produce a quick...

    Wiring a Contactor

I'm looking at installing a contactor so that I can control 3kW of electrical heating load with a standard central heating controller. The contactor i've found uses 240v to activate. I just need confirmation on how to wire it in. I'd also assume i'd need to fuse down the switching power to...

    Garage Self Build

That might be where you went wrong as you're able to stand in between the spacers and the mesh just bends then springs back. I'm certainly glad i can get the lorry right to the site as with it being 4.5m3 for the slab... meaning approx 11 tonnes+ when wet! The garage is kind of a prequel to a...

    Garage Self Build

Just thought I'd post an update For those wondering so far including mini digger and driver, muck away, tool hire, all materials and running electrics down to the site for the build and the eventual building the spend so far is just over £2000 to get it to how it looks now. Was an...

    Garage Self Build

Thought I'd post an update. All steaming ahead to get slab poured Saturday. Breaking up the old concrete garage certainly gave the SDS a workout. Decided to reduce the size to avoid BC

Wooden Garage / Garden Building membrane?

Exactly what I was after. How do I deal with opening for windows and doors? how do I end the membrane and vapour barrier? Also how do I join the individual breathable membranes? (or do I just overlap starting at the bottom?)

Wooden Garage / Garden Building membrane?

Hi All, I'm planning on constructing a wooden garage / garden building this summer. As I plan to insulate inside and potentially plasterboard inside do I need a waterproof membrane behind the outer cladding? The finished building from the house should look something like this only a bit...

    New garage light fitting tripping

It still shocks me how many people don't photograph the old wiring before ripping everything out, especially when everyone has a camera in there pocket
