    House rewire

Sorry my apologies, my statement was relating to this line "Members of schemes can't notify other peoples work to building control - only their own work." I completely agree someone cannot just come along at the end test then give an installation certificate

    House rewire

Actually untrue, you can use a 3rd party to sign off electrical work it's called the 3rd party certification. The person inspecting the work should be involved from the design phase right through to final testing. I paid about £180 for the sign off of 2 new ring circuits...

    Garage Self Build

Cheers Mobo, my original total budget was £7k so that's about right especially with hopeful savings on second hand stuff. The interior fit out will most definitely be whatever I can find for cheap second hand. The external cladding will again be what I can find for cheap that gives the look i'm...

Advice on stripping back to brick with damp walls

Probably not entirely relevant now but when I moved in to a 1930's house we had a few signs of damp mainly on external walls tiny bit where internal walls joined external ones. Long story short we ended up going back to bare brick then using a mesh membrane then dot and dab on top see photos...

    Garage Self Build

Just had a response from local BC for a garage is £305 which includes 4 site visits, planning is £206 so £511 all in. Probably worth it for the extra height and space I don't know if that is on / or over the boundary however the boundary fence which they own is further into my land than the...

    Garage Self Build

Thanks nickjb. I was getting worried when noseall said it would cost closer to £21k I was expecting around £1500 for base £1000 for block work, £500-1000 for garage door. £100 ish for patio door from FB marketplace, which still leaves £1400 for roof and mortar and miscellaneous For fit out...

    Garage Self Build

Why do you think it isn't a garage? The building will most definitely be used to house and give space to work on a car. The power is required for lighting and to power tools and the water so I can wash hands without bringing it in the house. Same reason for the toilet also will be useful during...

    Garage Self Build

Currently in the planning stages of building a detached double garage at the bottom of my garden. 1930's house cavity walls and solid floors, air brick in external leaf?

You'd hope so, some googling suggests not all companies did this. Also due the the open airbricks the wind would have blown in a lot of dirt over the last 25 years. Plus I imagine that when the double glazing was installed quite a bit of debris would have gotten in (fitted around 10 years ago)

    Light switch doesn't fit ideas

Yep well spotted that's the reason, should have taken a better photo... probably half asleep after nightshift I can be very handy with filler, and would like to avoid replacing the architrave due to difficulty sourcing matching. If using an architrave switch for 2 way switching would there be...

1930's house cavity walls and solid floors, air brick in external leaf?

This is the stuff done by the previous owner due to the age of the stuff I imagine there are probably quite a few gaps by now

    Light switch doesn't fit ideas

Upstairs landing light switch doesn't fit between the architrave. (See photo) Options are fit architrave switch, although once flush mounted might be hard to operate or make a wooden square for a standard light switch to flush mounted to. Or move the switch, although it's current position makes...

    Socket heights when rewiring

Where does it say that below 450mm is non compliant, the screen shot only says; "Approved Document M recommends that in new dwellings only, switches and socket-outlets for lighting and other equipment should be between 450mm and 1200mm from finished floor level" From what that states it only...

    Socket heights when rewiring

Hello, From what I believe sockets can be fitted at any height (as long as the flex isn't interfered with when plugging in) during a rewire of a dwelling that is not new. However when my 3rd party approver came he said they should be a minimum of 450mm, I fitted them all at 300mm as I find...
