    What type of sand?

again, don't worry too much, holm sand in the south west usually relates to a softer more rounded building sand, often used in bricklaying etc. Sharper sand is better for screeding etc.....

4x2's would suffice, i'd be more inclined to use 5's for rigidity.

    building blocks

In Bristol we have a competitor to Plasmor who manufacture a similar block. If you allow roughly £1 per block + Vat and if you don't regularly buy from a merchant then add a bit on top. Given the recent shortage if thermalite blocks these have been in quite high demand though recently. Fibo's...

Cost of a cavity block wall - crazy price?

Ditto. There must be some other factors here that we don't know about. Surely a gang of brickies wouldn't be that far out, even with a nice profit??

cost difference between piles and strip foundation

It's difficult to say without knowing more...but in fairness a local piling firm could price it up in an afternoon for you. It depends on the ground conditions? type of pile? Beam or raft? Clay heave or not? Amount of excavation required....I'm afraid it's a bit tricky to guess. Just to let...

    Suspended floors....

Hi All, whenever i've put suspended floors in i've always used treated timber. At the moment we are building a loft conversion with an extension to the rear, and the carpenter has turned up with a load of untreated timber for the floor joists in the loft. From what I can gather on the...
