    rainwater recapture

Thanks Lasors, I like the idea and Eco-Warrior brownie points of Rainwater harvesting but had just about dropped it on cost grounds, I may look at the DIY alternative. It will have to go underground but I will have machinery and spoil to loose anyway so this cost should be OK. Tul

    Concrete retaining wall

Oldun, Ta for that, managed to follow it OK (2nd reading). My SE is back from hols on Monday and has promised me the sketch and steel schedule that week before he heads off again...SE's must make good dosh!! Will make another entry when I get the doodle. Thanks Tul

    rainwater recapture

Thanks Nige F, interesting info. The tanks seem to have a 25yr life but the components certainly won't. You'd never pay it back and the renewal costs of the underground tank would be horrendous. Think you would have to do this for other reasons than dosh. Think you could get more bang for...

    rainwater recapture

I was doing the same thing myself, 2 grand plus installation thats a lot of loo flushes and wash cycles. Think I might just stick a couple of butts on the end of the guttering for the flowers and car wash and get the missus to wash the clothes in the stream!! thanks anyway. tul

    rainwater recapture

Yes it is toilets, washing machine etc. hello again oldun... some people must think your psychic!! I found that websit earlier today and went through the calc. It seems like you have to have a system with a header tank to supply the washing machine, i guess that gives the constant pressure...

    rainwater recapture

Anyone got any experience good or bad for a rainwater caputure/recyling system for a house. I'm going to build from scratch so I guess now is the time to do it. thanks Tul

    Concrete retaining wall

Sorry if this sounds a bit basic but just trying to work out my logistics timings. I can only build the cavity wall for the RC 4 to 5 courses right! do I then let the wall harden off for a couple of days then fill with concrete, and then build the next 4 or 5 courses, wait and fill...or... can...

    Water source heat pumps

I am building a new concrete wall alongside a small stream, there is an initial sketch for a collection duct to be incorporated into the back of the wall to use for a water source heat exchanger, anyone used a small stream for this purpose. What tech specs, manufacturers, temp conditions etc...

    Concrete retaining wall

Thanks Oldun, another comprehensive reply that adds up. The Cut back at both ends of the RC is in the plan so you nailed that one right. Doing the house found first I hadn't thought of but makes sense.thanks we'll do that. The house has a workshop and the overall length to the front is 20m we...

    Concrete retaining wall

Static, I believe the only stupid question is the one you don't ask so here goes.. are you sure you are looking at the sketch correctly? the only way to do maintenance to the block wall will be to excavate out the loose fill down to the base (~1.6m) thereby opening up a 650mm cavity on the...

    Concrete retaining wall

Static. How will a pure RC wall last longer than a filled cavity. The pure RC was going to be 200mm thick compared to 150mm cavity but the cavity RC will be sandwiched between two 100mm block walls with lots of wall ties. The steel skeleton will be much the same whichever method. Also the...

    Concrete retaining wall

Thanks oldun for such a comprehensive reply, especially since you didn't have all the info. We have certain things forced on us by the Environment agency (coffer dam) but we also have some things going in our favour (hopefully). The drawing shows the section, the existing building is a large...

    Concrete retaining wall

Gabions are used on the stream in places to stop erosion, they have been ruled out here, once the retaining wall is up foundations for a new hose will be built, the reinforced concrete is the solution agreed by 2 different structural engineers. My question is shuttering or build a block cavity...

    Concrete retaining wall

the river is really a stream and at this time of year only about 20cm deep about 3m wide but can flash flood. We have to build a coffer dam (just sandbags) to keep the footing dry, the foundations are to be excavated below stream level and the base 200 to 300mm deep about 1.5 m wide. I intend...

    Concrete retaining wall

I have a 33m long by 2m high reinforced concrete retaining wall to build along a riverbank which will then be stone faced. I have two solutions from the structural engineer 1) hire in shuttering and pour the concrete 2) build a 150mm cavity block wall and fill that with concrete both will have...

On site glazing in wooden frames

I have a lot of double glazed panes to fit in hardwood frames. I have been researching this and it isn't easy. If I look at NHBC guidance they only accept dry vented and drained installation so I guess this is a good start. Also it seems putty should be kept miles away from the edge strip as...

    Pad and Lintol foundation arrangement

Yes, a normal strip foundation has been ruled out. This is a very rare tree, the 1000 yr old Yew at Lorton and the 1500yr old one at Martindale are very famous and this tree is in the same league. If we push the point and even hint it might be under threat we will have a TPO slapped on...

    Pad and Lintol foundation arrangement

The soil is not clay as you think of it but Boulder Clay, common in the Lakes. It is extremely hard making a good base but trees have to shallow root for moisture, in my case the root area is massive but these are not large structural roots by the time they reach my project. Is it OK for my...
