    How to remove shower trap

Didn't smell too bad but it was quite chewy 8) Thanks for the tip on the silicone. I'm going to weild the limescale remover first.

    How to remove shower trap

Well well well ... the trap unscrewed nice and easily :) There's a rubber seal that sits between the underside of the shower tray and the top of the trap body. I'm going to clean up the limescale from the area and re-assemble it. It wasn't particularly tight, which probably contributed to the...

Grid dimmer reliability prob, looking for alternative

I'm not sure whether you're asking me whether I want home automation, saying that I should avoid it or saying that's what I should be doing! I don't want home automation if that clarifies things.

Ah, I thought that's what you meant and that's what I meant by "anagram" :)

Grid dimmer reliability prob, looking for alternative

Hi, Just done a quick google search. That does indeed look like nice kit, though a bit gimmickly for my wife's tastes to be honest and I'm guessing that the decision to buy this stuff is best made when you can still get at the cabling :( Given that I'm probably limited to a direct...

    How to remove shower trap

I bolted some joists together a while back when I was sorting the floor out in a different room (the whole house was in a state and I've had to gut every single room). I don't know what the bolts were called but they had a 10 or 12mm thread and I put some thick (3mm?) washers on each end before...

"carp" - is that an anagram?

    How to remove shower trap

Unfortunately, yes! I didn't know he'd done this until earlier today. It wouldn't have been quite so bad if he'd have bolted another section of joist to this one (on the other side) to bring some of the strength back - the trap doesn't protrude on the other side. In fact, I may just do that...

    How to remove shower trap

OK thanks guys. The only bits that I can get a purchase on are the 8 little prongs that sit in the hole, and they're plastic. Is there a special tool that makes this a bit easier? I can see these just breaking off without anything actually undoing!

    How to remove shower trap

Hi, Firstly, apologies if this has been covered before - I've tried searching the forum but haven't found an answer. Our shower trap has started to leak at the top under the shower tray. After examining it, I can see that this is because the person who installed it had positioned the...

Grid dimmer reliability prob, looking for alternative

Hi, Normally, how reliable are Richmond grid dimmers? I've got a couple and the one that gets used the most is starting to go all weird on me after being installed for just over 12 months. It's 2 way so push on/off. The symptoms are as if there's a bad connection somewhere inside the dimmer -...

    crossing buried cables

Thanks, I didn't know that but I can see why such a rule exists for the sake of the strength of the wall. In the case of a cavity wall, is this thickness limit ¹/6th of the thickness of the inner blocks that I'm chasing into? ie I presume I can't count the thickness of the entire cavity wall...

    crossing buried cables

Thanks. I have no idea what protection the in-floor cabling has as that was done before I bought the house. I would be surprised if they bothered to give it any sort of protection at all to be honest, judging by what else I've found. At least it's RCD protected now that I've replaced the CU...

    crossing buried cables

Hi, What is the general opinion of crossing cables (on different circuits) buried shallowly into a solid wall? The current situation is this: [code:1] | |...

    iron keeps tripping RCD

Thanks for your replies everyone. I'm off to get a steam generator iron. Last night I tested our existing iron with my multimeter. I measured a resistance of 8K between the iron's base plate and the live terminal on the 3 pin plug. Hardly surprising it trips the RCD the instant it's plugged in!

    iron keeps tripping RCD

Cheers for the info :) It sounds from what you and others have said that a steam generating iron is a safer bet. Obviously there are no guarantees in life but in general are they far more RCD friendly? What is a sensible price to pay to get a decent one (ie below what price is considered...

    iron keeps tripping RCD

Steam generator iron - something like this? http://www.woolworths.co.uk/web/jsp/product/index.jsp?pid=50717478 How does that work differently to a regular iron? Do you sell cordless irons?

    iron keeps tripping RCD

LOL @ securespark :) xerxes - yes, it's a steam iron. This time, she'd just rinsed it out after de-scaling it. However, beforehand it's tripped the RCD after 20 minutes of successful ironing. Why do these things leak to earth anyway? Surely that implies that the insulation is not up to...
