    CU labeling

Hi, Thanks for your answer but I only partly get it. If I had 8 ways on non-RCD and 9 ways on RCD, I can label the one next to the main switch as 1, put it in the non-RCD neutral bar at position 1 and connect the earth to position 1 on the earth bar. I could then carry on up to 8 like...

    CU labeling

Hi, I've replaced my CU with a 17 way Wylex split load and notice that there are some numbered sticky labels that came with it. The note said that they're to be stuck on each breaker. What are the rules regarding this? If I put number 12 on a particular breaker, does this mean that the...

Whole House Audio/Video - House is already prewired

If your query is more specific to hifi and home cinema rather than DIY and building work, you might have better luck asking on avforums.com: http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php

Light switch and a dimmer as well - possible?

Just walked into my local electrical wholesalers. Go to yell.com, enter electrical wholesalers into the business type and enter your town and it'll show you ones near you. Or you can buy online, as RF Lighting says. Make sure you get a deep enough pattress to accomodate the dimmer.

Adding a spur to an electrical socket

Yes avoid doing what some pillock did in my kitchen before I bought the house. I can't tell how the error was made but there was a spur cable coming down to some sort of electrical fitting before then going on to feed the original spur socket. Taking the front off this fitting would reveal...

Indeed - I've got a two gang box with 2 grid dimmers and an on-off switch in a 3 way plate.

    Socket develops fault, trips RCD

I hope not! Though I bow to your far greater experience. Why do you expect it to re-trip within a week? Because there are other old sockets the same as the one I've just replaced or for other reasons?

    Socket develops fault, trips RCD

I don't think I've disturbed anything - not only have I not worked on this cicuit, I've not actually worked on this entire wall, from either side. The spider theory is an interesting one - I'll have to open it up to see.

    Socket develops fault, trips RCD

Hi, Last night I was minding my own business when suddenly the RCD trips out. I work out that the circuit with the fault is one of the ring mains (the only ring I haven't actually worked on aside from actually wiring the ends into my new CU). I go round pulling out all plugs from the...

    when switching bedroom light on

Is it possible that you've wired them such that when you've turned both switches into the on position, the bulbs are in series? What happens if you remove one of the bulbs and then put both switches into the on position - does the other bulb still come on?

    Worried about recent work done

If you're going to use a UPS, might you need to consider a C curve breaker? A friend of mine has a couple of UPSs in his computer room (he has quite a lot of kit) and the turn on surges from his UPSs would trip the breaker until he replaced it with C curve. OK, so his situation is probably a...

    kitchen downlighters below bathroom?

Yes, they certainly seem to be. And I've no idea why that would be, unless the filaments are rated such that they run at a slightly lower temperature. A friend has got some in his kitchen. When one blew he replaced it with a lower energy one that consumed about 35W instead of 50W, and...

fibre washers - how long do they last?

Depends what you mean by DIY - I'd call it DIH because the fitter did it himself :) The shower pumps are easily accesible though without having to undo anything.

fibre washers - how long do they last?

Male iron fittings? I've never heard of those before. Something like this? http://www.choiceful.com/choiceful-id-101560-Vemco-15mm-Male-Iron-Elbow.html I'd always assumed those were brass!
