    Cavity wall insulation new extension

That is good to know. That gives me more confidence that my extension doesn’t need high spec insulation to keep in heat

    Cavity wall insulation new extension

Thanks all, I do get the feeling that for a smallish extension that insulation is insulation and probably don’t need to go over the top with expensive products. So long as the insulation is relevant and appropriately installed.

    Cavity wall insulation new extension

Here is the product spec - https://www.travisperkins.co.uk/Xtratherm-Cavitytherm-Full-Fill-1200mm-x-450mm-x-100mm/p/277970 If I was diy-ing, I’d probably try out the fullfill stuff, as I’ve already got the builders in, i will just leave them to do what they are used to. Reduces any mistakes...

    Cavity wall insulation new extension

Yes, but this is the fullfill cavity wall insulation which doesn’t need a cavity? It has an outlayer which prevents moisture. Considering they specc’ed it and decided to use slabs instead suggests to me they probably don’t know how to install the high spec stuff.

    Cavity wall insulation new extension

Yeh, I was hoping for the builder to use fullfill 100mm boards. However they are like 5x the price of the cavity slabs. I was hoping to go for high insulation values, but is the additional cost worth it?

    Cavity wall insulation new extension

Hi We are getting an extension built and the builders have specced 100mm insulation. I originally thought it was going to be 100mm PIR Insulation, however seems it’s going to be a 100mm cavity slab. I understand that PIR has higher performance rating than slab. However I believe if it was PIR...

    Building a cabin

Nice, sounds like a plan. Did you decide right up to use blocks, or did you consider other options before you built it?

    Building a cabin

Hi guys, I’m looking at DIY building a timber cabin approx 3x5 in the back of my garden to use as a man den :D I’ve attached a picture of the space. It will be in the raised part, maybe coming out slightly more. The 4 trees at the back are staying as I think it makes it a good feature. I’ve...

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

No, lucky for my semi the drains go from the side of each of the detached houses and joins in a manhole in the middle and down to the main road. No drains in the back.

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

No drains near the pads. Or do you mean the make shift air duct that looks like a drain? (Decided to not do a solid concrete floor, and instead do a timber suspended floor so it matches the rest of the house, and can have free flowing air)

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

Have actually gone to the builder to go 1m deep for the padstones to preempt any objections from building control. Also, gives me peace of mind, that the columns are sitting on something that is higher spec’ed

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

This is 1 of 2 padstones for holding a goal post frame consisting of 2 columns and a 6m RSJ, for a house

    Extension wall with partial earth

Hmm, figured we was on a diy forum... But anyhow it was good hear everyone’s advice on the matter. Here’s to hoping I have planned everything out sufficiently and I don’t have to end up demolishing anything :D

    Extension wall with partial earth

This was originally going to be a self build diy project :D But succumbed to a deal with the a builder doing all the main parts of the work. Still keen to do any other aspects of the work myself. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, and hope to document my experiences for a blog.

    Building service vs “The builder”

I do tend to believe that building service companies are just that, they effectively are companies who find the jobs, organise the work force and Wack on a margin 50%+ for their own project management, bringing contractors in, buying materials etc or however much they think they can get away...

    Extension wall with partial earth

No plans need to be approved as we are doing a building notice. No planning permission required as it is permitted development. I am also going to go through these aspects with BCO when they make their first inspection

    Extension wall with partial earth

Guys, as per the designed wall in my drawing, the contractor mentioned he’s going to lay a high load DPC. I would expect this to be in line with the existing DPC which would mean it would need to be partially under ground on the retaining wall by 300-400mm. I believe to appropriately waterproof...

    Cold flat roof

Hmm interesting, but seems your eaves are still 3m thus within PD. And maybe the top of the flat deck is managed by the ridge height limit? I’ve asked my SE to look at the height and reduce the joist sizes. As my roof is being made out of steel, I guess we can get away with 150mm joists, which...

Pad foundation on top of existing foundation

Hi guys, Has anyone come across this? And is it structurally stable? My house is a 1900ish house, and the existing foundations have held this house as well as many others in the area for coming up 100yrs. The soil is clay, no trees. My current foundations are 700mm below ground level and are...
