    Aerogel insulation mats

Where’d you find your roll of aerogel? The best I found was this place, https://www.phstore.co.uk/aerogel-spacetherm-blanket 1200x1200 @ 10mm for £70ish. Should cover one side of the 203mm column @ 3m

    Aerogel insulation mats

Problem is, I dont have deep pockets. When I have the cash I’ll get EWI done and that steel won’t be a problem. But in the mean time I’m looking for something to lessen the impact of thermal bridging. I can get a roll of spacetherm that’s enough to cover the column for £100. Or maybe just a...

    Aerogel insulation mats

The SE has aimed to put the column as far as he can into the wall so that it’s flush. It’s designed to be 100mm brick outer layer, 203 beam = 300mm ish in total. The cavity wall of 300mm is then built off this. I was then planning to put 75mm pir on the internal solid wall on the other side of...

    Aerogel insulation mats

Just so we are on the same page, I assume you mean have the insulation wrapped on the exterior side of the beam (then brick or blocked up), as opposed to having the insulation on the interior side of the beam, (then plasterboarded). If so, I believe this is related to John D’s statement about...

    Cold flat roof

Is there any thing wrong with what I’ve picked up on that site? Other material seem to point designs towards a warm roof anyway?

    Cold flat roof

I designed the drawings, but on consultation with the roofer, he wanted to do a box gutter and hence the need for a parapet wall. So I’m making modifications to the design to suit.

    Cold flat roof

Having checked with neighbours, they seemed to prefer the idea of higher parapet walls, as it stops water and gunk from dropping into their side of the garden.

I see, I guess I need to double check with planning.

    Cold flat roof

Not even a refeb, it’s a new roof for a new extension. In theory there is no excuse to not use the latest recommended standards by default. I’ll ask him, there isn’t exactly much additional work for a flat roof, just roof height is a problem. How tolerant are BC with regards to going over...

    Cold flat roof

hi guys My builder has quoted a flat roof, and based on how he has described how he will build it, looks like he is aiming to build a cold flat roof and put insulation between the joists. Looking at recommendations, cold flat roofs are no longer recommended for new constructions due to...

    Aerogel insulation mats

On a serious note, did you completely wrap it up, wrap the inside or wrap the outside? Assuming if I only wrap the inside, I need to consider thermal bridging to the UB, and then wrap that up too. Hmm, seems inside wrapping seems to be a bad idea.

    Aerogel insulation mats

As we are on a diy forum, maybe I could make my own aerogel :D https://makezine.com/2012/02/01/how-to-build-a-supercritical-dryer-and-make-your-own-aerogel/ I wonder if BCO would pass it?

    Aerogel insulation mats

Has anyone used aerogel insulation mats before as a thinner alternative to PIR insulation boards? I have a steel column which I’m considering insulating to prevent thermal bridging, however as I cant use PIR as it’s too big, I could try wrapping it up in an aerogel sheet/blanket. Something...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

That gives me some confidence that you did a similar sized opening as mine using strong boys. Much of my research and talking to people was related to mainly smaller than 6m openings. Above the house is just a 6m stretch of 9” solid wall and a pitched roof. He wanted 5 or 6 steel needles to...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

I did have confidence until this one guy pops along, says he does this stuff all the time and completely derails the plan. I guess, worst case scenario I have an SE backed liability insurance, builders liability insurance and at least BCO checks and confirmations.

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

Had a new builder check on my job today. He mentions that it’s not feasible to hold open a 6m opening using strong boys alone, and needs to use 5-6 needles right through to the 2nd floor. I suggested whether or not a mixture of strong boys and a needle in the middle of the span could be...

What does it mean by blockwork to DPC

I don’t actually have any brick in my plans I showed him, unless he plans to use engineering bricks to DPC then Block on top of that... Looked at his other jobs, and seems I’m interpreting Blockwork to DPC could mean down to DPC. He did another job with the same label. Anywho, will ask...

What does it mean by blockwork to DPC

Hi guys, I got a quote from a builder which specs, - blockwork to DPC for a rear extension. Before I sound stupid, and ask him. Is this a general builders terminology for building the extension walls, or does it actually mean foundation to 1 - 2 courses of Block to standard DPC level, and...
