    Extension wall with partial earth

Yes, it’s a Telescopic Z duct. Like this https://www.timloc.co.uk/uploads/images/1201%2C_1203%2C_1204%2C_1205%2C_1206_and_1201AB_Timloc_Televent_and_Extension_Accessories_with_Airbricks_.jpg I need to update that drawing (agree it’s crap) to be joined to a 100mm pipe out to the main house.

That waste pipe is an air brick and vent. It’s to provide air back into the existing void. Probably have 1 or 2 z shaped vents and 2 going straight out the side of the extension.

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

Ok, property company to do all the works in 1 go. I asked them about how they will be holding up the free standing wall after the beams and columns have been fitted, as there were worries from other builders about the wall being dangerous as it’s free standing. He laughed, saying the wall will...

    Extension wall with partial earth

This is what i has envisioned in the attached picture. I believe I read somewhere that retaining walls over 1 meter would require SE calcs. However the retaining part of my wall is just 0.6 - 0.7m from ground level.

    Extension wall with partial earth

I have a structural engineer however he’s really only done the structural calcs for the steel works of the build. I’m designing the extension myself and getting a builder to build it.

    Extension wall with partial earth

Also just checked with celcon, they don’t recommend using any of their blocks, be it the foundation Block, or the hi 7 Block for the retaining part of the wall. Guess it’s the standard dense concrete block it is then @ 2 layers

    Extension wall with partial earth

Ok, I’m thinking now a 200mm outer wall 100mm cavity, 100mm inner wall should be sufficient and that leaves 100mm either side the foundations. The existing wall has stood for over 30 years at 200mm, so I’m hoping there shouldn’t be any issues with a new 200mm wall. Cost wise a 200mm and 300mm...

    Block strength for single story.

Lol, sorry, 30mm airgap. Honest typo! :O

    Block strength for single story.

Checked with BCO, they mentioned that typically it’s 300mm airgap with PIR, fullfill if non PIR, but it comes down to the product.

    Building service vs “The builder”

Yeh, I realise that. I don’t tend to get a lot of trades men in and I get hands on, on things that I can do myself. One of the reasons is this headache of rooting out this type of service. Based on my experience its about a 70% building service to 30% builder out there. I am relatively savvy...

    Building service vs “The builder”

Hi guys I’ve always been curious about the building market. I generally use sites such as mybuilder.com to find tradesmen. Now, when I submit a job I generally get building companies that come back to be and then some of the actual builders who are doing the work. Now when I’m talking to the...

    Garden retaining wall

hi guys I have a garden retaining wall which I am planning to lower the level of the garden and the wall to about 1/2 it’s current height. The issue is that it has got loads of salt deposit on its face. I assumed this was due to the lack of damp proofing. However, now that I have knocked it...

    Block strength for single story.

I have asked them the question, just waiting for their response. Seems weird how a neighbour would have a 2 story extension build with full fill, which I believe he would have had to check out with a BCO. And I don’t get approved. I did ask one of the builders yesterday who quoted 100mm PIR...

    Block strength for single story.

Yeh, was planning to raise it with BCO if my area is ok with full fill. one of my neighbours showed me his build during construction and it used full fill pir. Otherwise, I could use something like this, http://www.xtratherm.com/products/thin-r-plus/ct-pir-cavitytherm Though it is quite a bit...

    Block strength for single story.

Yes, already looked at that. With standard 100mm outer leaf Block -> 100mm full fill pir insulation -> 100mm celcon Block I get a u value of 0.17 if I use solar or 0.18 if I use the standard. I believe this is way sufficient.

My structural engineer just mentioned standard 300mm cavity wall in the paperwork.

    Levelling Joists

Hi My 1930s house had unlevel floors. They were low at the sides of the room and high in the middle. I ended up levelling my floor joists by tacking on shim cut from scrap wood. then putting the timber floorboards back in. This gave me a level floor to install over floor underfloor heating...

Hi guys. Anyone have any thoughts about the usage of the below blocks for a single story flat roof extension The celcon solar blocks https://www.travisperkins.co.uk/H%2BH-Celcon-Solar-Aerated-Concrete-Block-2-9N-100mm-Pack-100/p/701733 Vs Celcon Hi strength Block...

Keeping wall up temporarily after beam installation

That’s a good idea, I generally need the timber anyway, and if the builder isn’t happy to do it, I might be able to get a simple studwork built in a day or so.
