    Which mitre saw?

hmm, you mean "how do I cut square by hand". then my best advice is to use less pressure, take your time and take light strokes with the saw. mark a line on it with a t square, and hold the saw correctly. I'm sure theres a video on youtube for it. If your just looking for a cheap mitre...

    Loft insulation and plasterboard

Oh Christ mate, that insulation is heat insulation which you put around hot objects to stop them burning the walls. You need proper wall insulation.. like kingspan or celotex. The buliding regs recommend 100mm insulations which is £40 per sheet...

    Cleaning and keying with scotchbrite?

Hmm, yeah, it sounds simple, but I thought the scotch brite may have lifted the dust better. I was just asking for what-ever gave the better results.

    wall prep for tiling

If you can't plaster, then dot and dab is your best bet. Rip it all of so that no water gets down the back. Batton it all out flat and make sure everything is level. Reboard it with plaster board and fill the gaps. Most people will recommend using the water proof plastrbaord. If you...

    Wooden Staircase DIY

I've never used one, but I personally would cut the supports myself. Just measure the diagnal distance and share by the number of step you want. There are some vids on youtube on how to do it. Just makes sure you secure it really well at the top and bottom.

    New floor over old

Personally for what it will cost to rebaord the floor, you might as well rip the whole lot up and replacing it with new chipbaords. Othr than that 6mm plywood can be used to board over the top of it. It won't be much different in price though. (dependng on the size of the room)

    Loft insulation and plasterboard

Sounds like you need to start again. did you use a roofing membrane under the roof tiles first? This is designed to catch any water thats comes through the roof tiles. You always need a 50mm gap from the insulation to the roof tile. Otherwise water gets under the tiles and get stuck...

Raising joists in loft for boarding

You can raise the joist height with cheap light wood however, don;t put anything too heavy in there as the joist will not gain anystrength by adding wood on top. If you say the roof is unsuitable for conversion, then I don;t see why you want to board the whole thing. Maybe a smaller area in...

Approximate cost of replacing kitchen ceiling

Personally, I could have fixed it mayself within a day. Totally ripped down, re-boardeed and skimmied with plaster. The materials would have cost, about £60, and I would hve done the whole thing for about £200 (in cash in Newcaslte). However, thtas because I can plaster myself. for a...

    Which mitre saw?

Perosnally I use a CHinese rexon, but I wouldn;t recomend it as it's Chinese. I have seen some really small Mitre saws in B and Q recently for less than £60. Since its for DIY I would have a look at it, as it's small and compact. Other than that, any main brand will do. Especially if its...

    Cleaning and keying with scotchbrite?

Hi, can i ask the professionals how you clean the dust off, after keying old paint with sandpaper? (to be re-painted). I hav keyed my entire house, but don;t want the dust getting in my new paintwork, so I thought the best solution would be a dry wipe with scotchbrite. I thought to avoid...

    Extractor fan ducting condensation

This was a problem for my bathroom because of the low pitch of the roof. There used to be an air brick on the side, but it would have been very close to the shower for the fan and it would get splashed with water. No-no, Airbricks shouldn't be blocked up. they provide ventilation in older...

Recommendations for wood and skirting (white paint)

As any English native will know, we always paint our skirting boards and doors with white paint. In the past we used Brilliant White Gloss. but some ****heads in Brussels have taken that away from us. I therefore have no choice other than to ask... what alternative should I use? I hear...

Desperate for Help. Sime Format DGT HE30 no central heating.

Decided to bump my own thread after everyone helped me. The diverter valve uses a small pin to divert the water to CH or DHW, as in all CH systems. However the pin removes itself if no HW is called for, and it reverts back to CH. the pin pushes dwon when DHW is called, and srings back up...

    tumble dryer not turning

well it could be the capaictor. but it could be other things. pull the machine out and run it without the cover off. that way you should be able to locate the sound. if it is a capaictor, it's generally not ex-changable unless you have some VERY GOOD soldering skills. Otherwise, you will...
