Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

It's a good question. The answer is that I originally got him in to put a socket in the garden, because I understand that is "Part P" work. This would connect inside the garage. So he needs to be happy with the wiring in the garage before he does the installation.

Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

Searching online I found this: https://www.flameport.com/electric/socket_outlet_circuits/branch_tree.cs4 I assume that is the same flameport as on this thread? "A new circuit should never be designed in this way, but alterations and additions to existing radial circuits can result in this...

Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

So do you think the examples in the books don't include an FCU inline at the start of a spur rather than wired into the ring? Does anyone round here have access to some of these books?

Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

Thanks everyone for your input, it's very helpful. It's a shame because he states on his card he is an NIC EIC approved contractor, he seems a nice guy and I don't get the impression he's trying to rip me off (he's not asking for extra payment for this). It's also not as though he's being a...

Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

Thanks for the explanation, I must have misunderstood what radial means - I thought from what he was saying that everything had to be in a single line. That is a pain, because I've largely rewired everything for apparently no reason! On to the second point, the FCU itself. I've got a bit more...

Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

Thanks for the reply. When you say "socket to socket" do you mean I could still have branched out from them (that is one socket then splits to two more sockets etc). Because the reason I was branching, rather than going in a single line, was to reduce the length of the cable. Now I've gone...

Wiring multiple sockets on fused spur - what is the electrician calculating?

Hi, My house was built last year and came with a double socket in the garage, on a spur connected through the wall to the kitchen (see "original" below). Original by Justin0 posted 3 Oct 2019 at 1:10 PM I wanted to add more sockets to the garage for convenience, but don't need any extra...

Does adding a 16A MCB to a spur meet regs, or do I need a 13A fuse?

It does seem far more sensible to get an electrician to do work like this. I'm not sure it would give me enough advantage over treating the whole garage as a 20A-limited spur, provided that is a valid setup? That is interesting to know and it may be the case that the spur is connected in one...

Does adding a 16A MCB to a spur meet regs, or do I need a 13A fuse?

Well this is partly an issue because the other side of the cable (that is, in the house) is no longer accessible. The builders did the cabling before adding the large glued-down floor panels, plasterboard on the walls etc. You're right though that if I was determined I could probably get to it...

Does adding a 16A MCB to a spur meet regs, or do I need a 13A fuse?

Ah well okay, that's a fair point. I suppose in which case I may be using the MCB solely as a switch for the whole garage lighting circuit. Sorry for not being clear enough. My intention is to do the work myself, then a little later get an electrician to inspect it and either say its okay, or...

Does adding a 16A MCB to a spur meet regs, or do I need a 13A fuse?

Great point that the spur load for a double socket could actually be 26A anyway, so in fact 20A would be well within this. I think what I'd like to do then is get a 20A MCB for the sockets, and a 3A for the lights (connected to the house lighting spur which is 6A in the main house CU). The 3A...

Does adding a 16A MCB to a spur meet regs, or do I need a 13A fuse?

Thanks Flameport, I take it the 16A MCB is no good then? I want to use a breaker rather than a fuse, so that it can be reset easily if tripped. The FCUs I've seen are fuses - can they be breakers too (despite the name)? For me, the consumer unit is just a box to hold some MCBs. Is there...

Does adding a 16A MCB to a spur meet regs, or do I need a 13A fuse?

Hi, I have a new-build with (just about) attached garage which has one double socket and one light socket installed. The double socket is connected via a spur from the ring main for the downstairs sockets using a single 2.5mm T&E cable through the wall to the main house. Downstairs sockets are...
