Novelty / Silly current carrying capacity post

This thread needed bumping, I want to see more things melting!

    Wylex 17th Edition Consumer Unit

I don't think it's fair to assume they're fake just because they're sold on eBay. Or are you saying prices haven't fallen much and a £10 RCBO is almost certainly a counterfeit item?

    A few things I don't understand

Okay, I guess I need to read up on 'diversity'. Cheers for that, shall have a read :) Fair enough, that makes sense. What rating would be appropriate, 20A? Or would it depend on length of circuit / amount of plug sockets on the circuit? I guess ring circuits are much preferred over...

    Wylex 17th Edition Consumer Unit

Yeah that's true enough, what I should have said was I've been searching for Wylex RCBO's which I'm lead to believe are one of the better 'branded' products, and they can be found on eBay for around £10. In fact, I'm struggling to find any £20+ RCBO's. Have prices dropped a lot since over a...

    A few things I don't understand

But on the above installation, it would in theory be possible to overload the RCD, say if we purposely put on a couple of electric heaters, the oven and the electric shower for a few hours... You get my point. So with this 'diversity' thing, we're hoping the RCD never has >80A for extended...

    A few things I don't understand

Hi, I have some questions that have been bugging me and I was hoping you'd be able to help :) 1.) So let's say we have a 100A main fuse (incommer fuse?) which goes to an 80A RCD in a comsumer unit, feeding 2 x 32A, 1 x 40A and 2 x 6A MCB's. As I understand it, RCD's do not offer...

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I saw it mentioned earlier that RCBO's are very expensive and one poster even quoted £40 per RCBO, however I was searching eBay earlier where they can be found for around a tenner. Have prices come down a lot since a year and a half ago?

Running a cable through the house...

As BAS said, you may as well run two cables at the same time, for future expansion etc, and a nice wall plate with two CAT5 sockets looks far far better than some ***** wire coming through the wall.

    halogen lights

CFL and (decent) LED downlighters seem awfully expensive at the moment for what they are. Perhaps if prices were lowered, people would consider the 'greener' alternative?

    Economy 7 telemeter question ?

If they simply put in a new meter, then you won't have a separate E7 circuit unless they install one at the same time. The easiest thing to do would be to find out what your E7 switch on period is and set a timer on your immersion heater to switch on during this period.

Interesting. I'm 24 and jobless, I wonder if they'll accept someone as 'old' as me.

Economy 7 - Weird switching times

Cheers for that, Roo :) This seems the most likely explanation. There's obviously some kind of timing going on for it to switch on as accurately as it does.

    Economy 7 telemeter question ?

It depends how your property is wired. For a property that was designed with E7 in mind (areas without gas, for example) you'll have a main meter with Low and Normal readings. From there you'll have your main house circuit, supplying power to sockets / appliances etc. You will also have a...

    House electrics keep tripping

If the whole house is 'tripping' and not the boiler MCB then it'll probably be the RCB tripping due to an earth fault, as already suggested.

Replacing Economy 7 spur with a 13A socket

Excellent post, BAS. I skimmed through it quickly as I'm off to bed in a second but I shall have a proper read later today :) I'll also check the trip rating of the RCD and the test switch.

Economy 7 - Weird switching times

Nope, they're not on the bill. I'm assuming the E7 meter is switching at the wrong times, firstly because the meters for the other four apartments all switch at the same time and secondly because the sticker on the E7 meter reads '11.30 - 6.30'. Admittedly the sticker looks pretty old but it...

Replacing Economy 7 spur with a 13A socket

Hehe. I'm confident that the install is safe, so sod notifying the council for a lil job like this. It'll probably start a whole new topic and BAS will throw links at me left right and centre, but what exactly is 'notifiable work'? I understand that certain types of electrical work require you...

Replacing Economy 7 spur with a 13A socket

Sorry to be a pain, I'm just bumping my thread to try and get an answer as I'm looking to get this socket finished sometime today :) The cable coming from the CU has now been confirmed as 2.5mm. Am I now allowed to wire directly from the socket circuit, as to make a spur? Thanks :)

Replacing Economy 7 spur with a 13A socket

Hi guys I've just found that the wire is actually 2.5mm, not 1.5mm as I said before. Would I still need a 13A spur? I don't understand why I would... Thanks!
