How to make wall light safe before decorating

Probably far easier just to replace it with a new fitting.

Indeed I only posted it as that was the first thing that came up on google. I would never buy a cable of ebay, but a lot of IT suppliers also just sell the same crap. Just out of interest where is a good place to buy these C7 cables from? I am short of them but I have always been too scared...

    Adaptors

I have no idea about the the legal aspect of it, but I have mention this before a lot of times and sometimes get stick from it, but amazon and ebay is full of illegal and dangerous cables with fake plugs, fake fuses, cables with not enough copper in them for their claimed rating etc. It is a...

Replace failed LEDs with normal diodes in Christmas lights?

If they are wired in series, wouldn't putting a diode in a place of an LED then increase the voltage going to all the other LEDs those shortening the life?

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

Meant to mention that too, I am assuming it is dead because the spark was supposed to replace any VIR back in 1980. It was a condition of the mortgage that any VIR was replaced with PVC. However I will do some investigation to find out. The one thing I do know about electrics is never assume...

If you mean this then yes http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/190850478653?hlpht=true&ops=true&viphx=1&lpid=95&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=95&ff19=0 I am not sure what the proper name of the connector is. Certainly many netbook FSP PSUs use them, and a...

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

Do these pics of the DNO side help? I am not sure if the earth wire above is just clamped to that incoming cable or if it goes inside it. It looks like it is just clamped to it, and I suspect the out sheath acts as the earth.

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

Certainly is an earth wire going under the ground which I always assumed was connected to a rod, but I don't know for certain. Cannot easily access under the floor at the moment.

Certain specialist printers will consume a lot more than cheapo basic ones. Most I have seen are around 200w at the most. I was very tired when I made this thread and it was just something that annoyed me at the time. The woman was also telling me how she repaired her boiler and other things...

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

Just read a bit more on it, I can see how it is a concern if it is a TT system. My parents have suggested replacing all the sockets with RCD ones but that is going to be expensive and as far as I am concerned the money is better spent getting it all checked out and doesn't fully solve the...

I realise it is cable size, but I have seen many think 2 core figure of 8 cables etc with 13 amp fuses on it. If I know the appliance is only going to ever consume around 100w what is the harm on putting in a 3 amp fuse even if the cable is 1.5mm flex? Surely regardless of cable size, a lower...

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

I phoned the DNO but they didn't have the information, they said only a spark would know. Is there anyway of telling from those photographs? Is there any basic tests I can do to find out? If it is a TT system does that mean that the earthing is not up to scratch?

Was chatting to a girl who reckons she doesn't need a man because she can fix anything. She can even change fuses in a plug. I said to her can you calculate the required fuse given the size of the flex and the amount of current the appliance is likely to assume? Her reply:- Well what ever...

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

The stuff I know is wrong is silly things like light switch cables under door frames etc, but I assume adding RCD will make that semi compliant. What about things like my burglar alarm e.g my cable placement, will the spark only be concerned with the supply to the control panel?

Currently no RCD protection any where apart from the security light. I am in no doubt at all the CU needs replacing, regardless of if they comply I cannot imagine they last for ever. Not even expecting to have everything done to 17th edition standards, there is no way of doing that short of a...

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

Have discussed this before, ok some of my DIY work which was done with the intention my parents will be in the house for ever:- Installed a burglar alarm and put some of the 6 core alarm flex through a disused door, not compliant but as the door doesn't even work properly at the time it was...

Wlyex 8 way standard - what issues are likely to come up?

Suggested again that the 1980 wiring needs checking. During some building work I was doing to jack up a sunken floor I discovered the 2.5mm T&E cables which form the ring main are not even clipped to the joists but floating with the only mechanical anchorage being the gap between the floorboards...

How old do the electrics in this house look?

Its a damn site more modern than the electrics we have, our CU would not have been out of place in 1965!.

Using a disused circuit to wire up sockets in the kitchen

That is that is the issue, I have am bit drunk now but still can think logically. The fuse board is a 1980 wylex standard, but I believe this circuit is mid 70's as I was told the electrician told my parents it was a PCV and did not need rewiring. Although that wiring has been in place since...

Using a disused circuit to wire up sockets in the kitchen

I am hoping to gut and replace the kitchen early in the new year. At the moment there is just two double sockets on there, 1 of the ring main and other via what used to be old cooker outlet. There is another circuit which used to to the immersion heater in the bathroom. The cable goes to a...
