Can anyone identify this mains water pipe?

Our water stopped suddenly yesterday and I found the problem outside where the mains pipe to the house had detached from the external stopcock. Someone in the past had bodged it in with silicone or something. I want to repair it properly but not sure how because I can’t identify the type of...

Water drip from main fuse box

I'm the OP and just thought I'd give a follow up in case anyone's interested. The engineer came and did the check on time as promised. I don't know what a DNO is, but I called the number on my bill and he arrived in 2 hours after driving 30 miles through a storm so I can't fault the service...

Water drip from main fuse box

Thanks for that info guitar and westie. That all makes sense. Anyway, the engineer has rung back to say he'll be here in an hour, so I guess I'll find out then. I'm pretty impressed with the response speed, especially as it's blowing a real storm at the moment here.

Water drip from main fuse box

Thanks for the quick answers guys. OK, I've rung the electricity company and they're sending someone to have a look. I'd still be interested to know what's going on if anyone has any ideas.

Water drip from main fuse box

I hope someone can help with this as I'm stumped. It's raining hard at the moment and I've just noticed that water is slowly dripping out of the main fuse box and a small black box next to it. By fuse box I mean the grey box that the main electricity company cable feeds into and which is sealed...

Interior fungicidal wash - any ideas?

Can anyone recommend a good fungicidal wash for interior masonry walls? I've found a few washes but most seem to be for exterior use, so I'm not sure they can be used indoors. I'm needing it to deal with a black mould problem. The underlying cause has now been sorted we think but we're left with...

    External stopcock -is this busted?

Thanks Andy and John Unfortunately I can't really get my camera down the hole to take a pic as it's so narrow (my proctologist said the same thing last week) but yes, I can see the end of the stopcock is rectangular. Anyway, looks like it's a 'Toby' then, so thanks for that bit of education...

    External stopcock -is this busted?

Hi Guys I'm trying to turn off my external stopcock. It's an ancient one but I've got it moving. I'm leaving the kitchen tap on to see when the water stops, and what happens is the water keeps coming off and on as the stopcock rotates. It's as if the stopcock is acting like one of those...

    Riello RDB oil leaking

Sorry, just thought of one more thing. If I disconnect the oil feed pipe to replace the oil feed pipe or the o ring, do I need to bleed the oil supply after replacing it?

    Riello RDB oil leaking

Brilliant, thanks burnerman. I'll have a go then. Thanks very much for the help.

    Riello RDB oil leaking

Thanks burnerman and Mickey for that useful info. I could make that repair, either of the pipe or the o ring myself, so thanks for the tip. The only thing is, do you know if replacing either of these bits would mean resetting the pump pressure or adjusting the fuel/air mix, which I believe is...

    Riello RDB oil leaking

Hi guys I have a Riello RDB oil burner and it has developed a leak. The burner is running fine but the oil stink in the house is bugging us all. After removing the red cover I can see that the leak is from the junction where the long thin brass pipe joins the oil pump. I've tried tightening it...

Removing hard black crust in heating pipes (not limescale)

Thanks to both of you for that really helpful info. I was just telling the wife it's about time we got a sludge filter but for some reason she seems to prefer earrings. Can't imagine why. Anyway, your replies have strengthened my case. I'll check the Sentinel and Fernox ones. I also found a few...

Removing hard black crust in heating pipes (not limescale)

Thanks irjgas, and that's useful info. The trouble is this stuff is not sludge but hard black flakes, some quite large. I don't think the usual power flush chemical would dissolve this so I'm wondering if something else will.

Removing hard black crust in heating pipes (not limescale)

I'm moving a radiator and have cut the pipes to it. Inside the pipes there are big flakes of hard black crust , some up to 5mm across. Some of these are neatly curved, so must have formed on the inside of the pipe and come away. It can't be limescale because this is a soft water area so I think...

Why isn't my insulated plasterboard sticking?

Thanks Richard and AJ What you both say makes a lot of sense and confirms my suspicions about using only D&D on this type of wall. I'm glad I only did one test board. I'll go back to the original plan of battens and mechanical fixings, which seems to make more sense. Thanks to both of you for...

Why isn't my insulated plasterboard sticking?

Hi Richard Thanks for your reply too. Also very useful. How does using D&D destroy the vapour barrier though? By eventually pulling away the foil layer perhaps? Also, wouldn't using mechanical fixings also destroy this barrier since it involves making holes in it?

Why isn't my insulated plasterboard sticking?

Many thanks for that reply AJ Yes, the stuff I have is similar to K18 but it can be used for dot and dab according to the specs. That was why I chose it actually. It's this: http://www.insulationexpress.co.uk/documents/Speedline%20Thermal%20Laminate%20Datasheet.pdf Thanks for the suggestion...
