What to do with unused vented ridge tile

Hi, Just boarded my loft out and I now plan on removing the old flue to the living room which is now redundant. There is zero chance of it ever being used again, it messed up the walls in the living room and bedroom above, and the gas supply pipe has been cut off. I plan on stuffing the...

    Curved P bath overflow fitting

Yes unfortunately the hole was pre cut into the bath when I bought it, lesson learnt on buying Chinese crap  I've already had to build a frame round it to stop it flexing! Managed to sort it anyway, picked up this kit from Screwfix today, the washer on the overflow is a thick but...

Boiler rumbling and cutting out, especially when cold

Just to follow this up, I eventually got the guy back, who came with someone else who was the 'gas man' - I'm guessing he had to pay him to come out which was why he tried to fob me off with nonsense. Various adjustments have been done, apparently the pressure coming in is a shade low poss due...

    Curved P bath overflow fitting

I had my house totally re plumbed about a year ago with a new bathroom suite including a P shaped bath, with the overflow on the curved bit on the side for some reason. The overflow that the guy fitted was a standard flat one bulked up with a load of silicone sealant, which has never sealed...

    Elecricians' safety slipups

Most of the 'Central' 54v power plants were retired before my time, there's a couple still kicking around but mostly replaced with smaller individual units that use cables and distribution boards rather than bus bars back when System X and AXE10 came in. The old transmission stuff, which is...

    Elecricians' safety slipups

That's interesting to know, round here the east mids SAPs keep the keys in their pocket, west mids will only use key safes (issuer and recipient have individual keys, both required to open safe), and south west/south wales put the keys in a brown envelope that's given to the recipient with the...

Service Head replacement - who pays?

I got called to look at a very similar cutout recently, in an old workshop at the back of a large house that had been forgotten about for years, one out of the two phases and the neutral had gone open circuit somewhere so I had the whole lot relaid and replaced with a modern 3 phase...

Surface water running into foul drain - is this ok?

I'm doing a bit of work at the minute in preparation for a new drive, and plan on installing some channel drainage at the front. I have got an existing drain to the front for the canopy's gutter (but in totally the wrong place!) and also one at the side next to the car port's concrete slab...

Laying slab for porch, undermining existing slab

Ground isn't great, I think it's been built on made up ground and there was a mine not too far from here, house was built in the early 70s so hopefully any settling will have occurred already. So far I'm thinking compact a load of type 2 up to around the existing level and pour a slab the same...

Laying slab for porch, undermining existing slab

Hi, i've got a load of spare concrete on a job next week so have started to dig out for a porch (2m x 1.2m) to save it going to waste. My house is built on a raft foundation. I have read up on how deep to dig out for a slab for the porch, there were various answers but as the concrete isn't...

Boiler rumbling and cutting out, especially when cold

I wasn't in when it happened, I had my whole house gutted and totally re done, the plumbing side was done over the space of a couple of weeks. The rads and all the pipework from the water meter upwards are all brand new if that helps, and various filters have been installed too.

Boiler rumbling and cutting out, especially when cold

Hi, I had a new boiler fitted in December, my house pretty much got re plumbed at the same time. The boiler is a Potterton Titanium 28HE. Occasionally, when running the hot tap especially on full flow, the boiler will start rumbling and the burner light goes off, it tries to re light...

What type of posts for this type of fence?

    Economy 7 meter faulty?

Usually the customer is happy at first to get rid of their large collection of "big ugly dial meters" and have a nice little Ampy meter to do the same thing, until they realise it doesn't do the same thing  usually after getting a big bill

    Economy 7 meter faulty?

Has it always been like this? Or has it suddenly stopped working properly? What make/model of meter, as said before pics would help. If its a modern single meter with two rates and only one output, it would rely on external timers to activate the heating, it wouldn't be switched by the...

    Building a porch...

Hi all, The "small overhanging roof" (I'm sure there's a proper name for it!) on the front of my house over the front door and front window is sagging and distorted. It would appear that most people in my street have had the same trouble, and have dealt with it in many different ways...

What type of posts for this type of fence?

Well I've ordered all the stuff today, delivery Thursday, so hopefully it'll be done by the weekend. Fenced it off with some harris fencing today and going to cut the old stuff down quick before it falls down  Pics to follow later on...
