Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

John, would you mind providing me a link which I can refer the SE to, to prove it is a 23 not a 30. I trust you - not him - but it would help my case if I had supporting documentation many thanks

Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

    Hope this is clear - if not I will repost with appropriate spacing LOADING DATA UDL Dead kN/m Imposed kN/m FROM LOFT 0.5 x 8.0m x 0.5 (0.25) kN/m2 2.00 1.00 FIRST FLOOR 0.5 x 8.0m x 0.5 (1.50) kN/m2 2.00...

Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

The flange (on the exposed side at least -can't see the other one) is 6.8mm. Does that def mean it is a 23kg? I have asked the SE to clarify why he submitted calcs to the BC for a 30kg and if he is wrong I would demand a refund or at the least revised calcs for free. More to the point how...

Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

Ok. On second thoughts not a good idea re the other one either ('casual'a and 'disinterested' hardly a warm recommendation) Nonsense aside...what do you recommend?

Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

The unchartered one does not. (Incidentally, he contributes to this forum occasionally) I think the chartered one does, but not sure. Will names help? Are you familiar with london engineers?

Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

It's a 152 x 152 (x 23 or 30 acc to 1st and 2nd engineer respectively). Span is 3.5m 1st engineer says it is laterally unrestrained, second has written it is restrained. Loading data, which both have used (but prepared by 1st one) is 11.81 dead kN/m and 7.63 imposed.

Getting BC to decide between 2 engineers?

Some of you may recall I had my dining room enlarged by some cowboys who never involved either a Structural Engineer or BC. I have since had 2 S Engineers to inspect, with a view to having it regularised. One (not chartered) calculated the loadings and then prepared calculations. He says...

No Fensa cert; is LABC fee worth it?

Oddly enough just got FENSA cert in the post. The job was notified in Jan 2012 that it had been carried out in Aug 2010! Anyway, I'm not complaining now that I've finally got it.

    Cold bedroom, and loft insulation

Many thanks for your advice/help, John. I think we will get a new rad, although as you say, heat loss through the walls will no doubt continue to be a problem. The floor is up at the moment anyway for other reasons so prob a good time to do it.

    Cold bedroom, and loft insulation

All 3 walls appear to be approx 9.5 inch. Does that mean they are single skin in which case we cant do cavity wall insulation? The room is 2.65 W x 2.70 D X 2.65 H., the rad is an old single panel 173 x 45 (odd dimensions I know) and it does get very hot. A BTU calculator says we would need...

    Cold bedroom, and loft insulation

The walls are old, so I doubt it. They are also very very cold to the touch. Will external render help at all? The room is so small that internal insulation will not be appreciated

Frost thermostat in loft - what temperature?

Heating Engineer who fitted the frost stat, says main risk in loft would be the mains cold freezing. The pipe stat will not help this as is fitted to Return. If anything it will make things worse as the heat loss from the Return will be reduced. If this is correct, what should I therefore do...

    Cold bedroom, and loft insulation

A back bedroom is exposed on 3 sides and hence much colder than rest of house. I have checked in the loft and there are insulation rolls laid out above the room (not sure if 27cm, but not visibly less than rest of the loft's insulation. If anything - even more) However my query is that there...

Frost thermostat in loft - what temperature?

I don't. And I just realised that I would need one, after researching it a bit on this forum. What would you advise me to do till I have one fitted? Are either of the above a sensible option?

Frost thermostat in loft - what temperature?

The loft remains cold. the boiler is working flat out, house is boiling, but no sign of boiler wanting to stop! is it an idea to leave the lift hatch open a little so that the hot air rises? Or is it better to turn down the stat?

Frost thermostat in loft - what temperature?

Loft contains unvented Telford Tempest cylinder and relevant pipework, almost all pipes are lagged (boiler is downstairs in kitchen). What temperature should the frost thermostat be set to? Currently it is approx 2 C but that means that in this weather it is on basically all the time. Many...

cold bedroom - what size radiator?

My 4 y.o. daughter's bedroom approx 2.7m x 2.7m is 'open' on 3 sides and hence a good few degrees colder than rest of house. Currently there is an old single panel rad measuring approx 173 x 45. Would it be a good idea to buy a new rad, if so which/what size? Maximum possible dimensions...

Unsure if RSJ fitted correctly - metallic noise if kids jump

Would you believe it - I had the steels exposed from upstairs and from a cursory measurement it appears to be about 300 high - width a bit harder to tell but appears to be approx 160 wide. Will know more once I get an SE to measure. So well done Woody!

    RSJ's not painted

I'm not getting regularisation. I just want to know best practice, in the circumstances The bizarre thing is that i have the Cert of Completion from LABC, despite the Chief Surveyor having admitted to me that (having not received calcs from builders despite such requests) BC assumed no steels...

    RSJ's not painted

So..after a year of worrying about them, I've had the RSJ's in my extension exposed for an engineer to come and inspect. I understand they should have been painted (a) against rust and (b) against fire. However, it appears they have not been painted at all (predictably). How important is...
