Need a PIR check done - worried about discruption

I actually know a few sparkies but none of them are currently working on domestic electrics so no good do this work however they have never used one as they do their own electric work (if that makes sense?). For this reason I don't know any 'current' electricians who come recommended. From...

Need a PIR check done - worried about discruption

As apart of the renovations to the house and my sister being electrocuted (minor) in her rented flat due to a faulty earth on a newish build I have convinced my parents that it is a good idea to have a PIR check done. The house was rewired in 1980 and I have replaced most the original...

    Bathroom downlights not working

Just one of these http://www.screwfix.com/p/marbo-ceiling-pull-cord-switch-10ax-6a-2-way/70874 I thought the MK ones were a bit ugly as the screws show. I paid £2.50 for a single way one, which is over the top but B&Q is 2 minutes drive away so it wasn't worth faffing around to save £1.

    What's wrong with my socket?

I just cannot believe how thick some people are. I must admit it did take me about 10 seconds to spot it. No sleeving on the earth either. The worrying thing is its these idiots that do the more advanced jobs.

Pull cord, you know what I mean :).

    Bathroom downlights not working

Sorted it. Looks like the metal contacts in the push cord switch had worn away causing it to arc. Replaced the push cord switch and it now works fine.

    Bathroom downlights not working

I have no idea, although I was there when the work was being done I was only 18 at the time . Not surer where the transformer is but I do remember the plumbing was copper and he used solder joints rather than compression joints. The pipes are from the hot water tank, the transformer would...

    Bathroom downlights not working

Not had a look yet as I have too much going on, funeral on Monday and not been too well but hopefully on Tuesday I will be able to have a look at the problem. The problem is we have three 12v downlights in a box to conceal pipes above the bath. My mate put these in ten years ago and I've...

    Bulb keeps blowing in workshop

Well its a bedroom really which functions as a work shop. It has a pendant light and a bulb in it. I am find bulbs only last a few weeks before they blow. I tried a halogen one and that blew after 5 weeks. They do not flicker and seem to work fine. I replaced the lamp holder and flex 6...

Bad to wire a plug like this?

Most plugs have a diagram on them showing you exactly what length to cut the wires at. If you do it this way you will have no exposed copper and its also easier to wire. A good pair of wire cutters are essential though otherwise wiring a plug is just 20 minutes of swearing.

    Old consumer unit

Are you qualified to access if the wiring is sound? If you don't know your're rewire able fuses to your MCBs then I would question if you are. There is a lot more to it than just connecting a wire to it and hoping for the best.

    Plug sockets

I've had similar issues and had to replace a few back boxes, in one case it because it corroded due to damp. As far as I am aware the type of back box you have in your house hasn't been used since the early 70's but even for a DIY hopeless person like me its not that much of a big job, providing...

    Dodgy electrician?

Yeah didn't you know they are fire hazards and were banned before the war  Sorry too much sarcasm from me today.

    Dodgy electrician?

But I will smoke while I am doing it [I don't smoke] then I will pop out to the shops for a few hours and then finish the job off :). Of course it will be safe, because the gasman told me on the phone last night that he turned the gas off :D

    Dodgy electrician?

I can't believe how trusting people can be, but this should be a lesson, never ever assume a cable is dead without testing it, even if you wired it yourself and know its dead, always double check. If you're working on different jobs at a time I would imagine it might be easy to forget that...

    2.5mm twin/earth red/black ebay

I thought from 2005 it had to be blue and brown?

    2.5mm twin/earth red/black ebay

Of course I suspect it is perfectly legal to sell this stuff, but just not legal to install for mains wiring.

Russ Andrews eat you heart out!

While do I believe from my own experiments cable does make a difference to sound this is just over the top. The best thing you can do mains wise is run the HIFI from a dedicate circuit rather than the ring or radial. Still amazed Russ Andrews has not been closed down (in my personal...

Hybride wireless/wired alarm panels - do they exist?

As the existing box is fine (will need a new battery) and its mainly the messy wiring at fault I are these any good? http://diy-alarms.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_22_86&products_id=302&osCsid=fiis1tkq6kvtnqnrmm55o8ndj5 Seems like a decent way of keeping costs down, while making...

Hybride wireless/wired alarm panels - do they exist?

Seems a bit of a waste due to the layout using lots of different cables from the box, but I am sure I have about 30 meters of 6 core in my lock up so what the hell. At the moment I have junctions going into junctions, should have just started from scratch when I replaced the box and added...
