    Wallpaper paste..??

Just a bit of a Q&A session here as i thought of a few things... 1. Does everything need to be sized or only new stuff? The vast majority of the room has had paper on before. It's only... That newly plastered piece that hasn't. My wife things that only this new section will need to...

Cracks & lumps in new plaster

Ah that makes sense. Would something along the lines of this be ok... http://www.diy.com/rooms/polycell-crack-free-ceiling-white-matt-smooth-emulsion-paint-25l/127228_BQ.prd The ceiling itself is quite badly cracked so if this is any good for the bit shown in the photo then it can get...

Cracks & lumps in new plaster

Thanks very much guys for the quick replies... The chap isn't a plasterer by trade, just a jack-of-all-trades kinda guy who can do a bit of this & a bit of that, plastering being one of them. Much better than i could do but obviously not the level or perhaps knowledge a full time plasterer...

Screws for door hinges just spinning. How to fix?

Thanks. Being not very good at DIY i didn't want to just jump in with both feet & make a mistake & then not be able to get the door back on  The screws currently in use - i'm not at the house at the moment so don't have the measurement but they seem quite short to me (mostly)...

Screws for door hinges just spinning. How to fix?

We had all the doors off upstairs while i painted the frames. That's been done now & it's come time to put them back on. Just started with the bathroom & out of 6 screws, 5 of them just keep spinning. Had this issue with some of the other ones too. I don't want to just ASSUME the best way...

Cracks & lumps in new plaster

We had a list of small jobs that required doing at our house, one of which was plastering. I don't know about the plasterers around your areas but i'm in touch with a lot of plasterers through my work & it seems they don't get out of bed for such small jobs. So for all these jobs we got a...

    Wallpaper paste..??

Sorry for the delay. I kept forgetting to note what it said. I had a look at one roll & there's nothing on the back of the paper, but on the labelling this is what it said...

    Wallpaper paste..??

Simply asking - is it a case of 'paste is paste' or is the dearer branded stuff any better than the cheap stuff? If i was doing it myself i'd probably just get the homebase cheapy paste. Thing is, a chap my wife knows who is a decorator is travelling quite a distance to paper our ceiling &...

Tips to avoid this with water based paint?

I'm painting some interior bits (just done windowledge, have stairs & door frames to go as well as skirting). The finish i've got is not perfect but at the moment it's about as good as what my capabilities will allow. I'm wondering where i can improve though... Basically say you have a 900mm...

Have you used a water based paint system on your bannister?

Aye that's be the obvious one. I just saw where the previous owners had done that & it looked patchy as hell. Awful. I don't know if that's how it is or whether it's due to the person who did it doing a bad job. Anyway if cleaning doesn't work I'll just have to paint over like you say.

Have you used a water based paint system on your bannister?

Yeah I expect most metals will mark it. For some reason tungsten doesn't though no matter how hard I scrape & bash it. Have you found a solution to wipe the marks off easier? I've found the light ones rub off with a fair amount of elbow grease & a cloth but the thicker/darker/heavier marks...

Have you used a water based paint system on your bannister?

So on the back of advice here we have switched from planning on going oil based to deciding on water based. It was the yellowing factor that swayed it. Some of you may remember the problem i encountered with water based paint - in that it marked up when certain metals touched it...

Correct Dow Corning sealant for the jobs?

I think based on what you guys have said i'm going to bin the Dow Corning, or just silicone sealant in general. I don't fancy it going black. I'll go with the acrylic stuff like you've said. When sealing, bit of a silly question to you, but would you paint first & seal last or seal first &...

Correct Dow Corning sealant for the jobs?

Thanks. Since I'm new to this & have only done a little bit in the past i'd not be bragging about my technique so thanks for that. Just to add, I don't want anyone to take my questions in a challenging sense. I'm just here to learn :-)

Correct Dow Corning sealant for the jobs?

Thanks. Never heard of this stelmax product before. Is it acrylic/silicone? I'm guessing it's not going to be silicone since the advice seems to be to stay away from silicone due to the manky black look. Do you guys just use decorators caulk for most jobs then out of interest (going back...

Correct Dow Corning sealant for the jobs?

Thanks. What am i actually looking for in the wording on the tube itself? You said neutral cure & low modulus. I've googled what this means but when i look at the tubing they don't state either of these terms. I was having a look in the local stores rather than order online & wait on them...

Correct Dow Corning sealant for the jobs?

I've emailed them directly but the form seemed like a right mess so i'm not confident of a response. Certainly not a swift one for me to get cracking this week. This stuff came recommended, but i didn't know there was so many different types. * First off, i'm not fussy whether it can be...

    Has Dulux bought Sikkens?

Ah thanks. It just confused me at first because the website was totally different to how I remembered it. I thought i'd clicked a dulux site by mistake. Anyway a bit more googling later & i'd bought the Sikkens paint from decorating direct.

    Has Dulux bought Sikkens?

I remember a good while back i was asking about paint & from memory Sikkens came back as #1 according to you guys. Well, we're in a position next week to begin painting so i was going to order, but the website looks totally different & there's Dulux labelling. So i wondered if Dulux had...

Suitable carpet & underlay for different rooms/requireme

We're quite a way off being ready to re-carpet most of the house but the 3rd bedroom i was hoping to get done on my week off in a couple of weeks so while i'm at it, i thought i'd ask about the other rooms too & i can refer back to this thread when the time comes. Basically i'd just like to...
