    anchor bolt spinning in hole

To make things worse I had to go out and buy a 12 mm drill bit when I already had a 10 mm one in the shed! I happened to see in an otherwise reliable DIY manual that for these fixings the hole generally has to be twice the diameter of the bolt, so there seems to be a lot of misinformation out...

    anchor bolt spinning in hole

Having not used these fixings before, I went ahead and followed the instructions and drilled a 12 mm hole. I'm sure a 10 mm hole would have been suitable.

    anchor bolt spinning in hole

Good tip about the nail: thanks. I put a couple of small 1" nails down the side, tightened the bolt and the sleeve seemed to grip until I could tighten no more. I must say, not impressed with this product but it seems to be done now.

    anchor bolt spinning in hole

Hi, I am trying to fit one of these to a brick wall. The fixings it came with are like these anchor fixings but with M6 hex screws. I followed the instructions and first drilled a 6 mm pilot hole followed by a 12 mm hole with a masonry bit. The drilling went fine into sound masonry. I hand...

    remove controls from electric guitar

Yes, I've had that (the scratchplate) off and cleaned the pots. It was interesting to see that they were all stamped "British made". The only problem with not being able to get the knobs off was that it made cleaning away 55 years of grime all the more fiddly. But with a combination of cotton...

    remove controls from electric guitar

Well, even with a bit of WD40 I still didn't manage to remove them. Spoke to the previous owner who (years ago) tried to remove them but didn't manage it either.

    remove controls from electric guitar

I tried pulling with some serious force and they wouldn't budge, and also levering. That's why I wondered whether there might be some other step to removing them. I'll try some WD40 first.

    remove controls from electric guitar

Oh, in the event that they should just pull off, any tips on what might get them moving?

    remove controls from electric guitar

Thanks: at least I'm not the only one who thought that! I'll give it another go when I get the chance. Good point about the glue but the guitar has been in a single pair of hands all its life and I'm confident it won't have been glued.

    remove controls from electric guitar

Hello, I've recently been given a guitar from 1963 like this one but in slightly worse shape. I am trying to remove the three volume/tone controls (bottom right of the picture) to do some deep cleaning. I've removed the little grub screws on each control, but the control knobs still won't...

    Fixing garden gate to wall?

Can't vouch for frame fixings. Several years ago I hung a gate from a 3x2 post attached to a wall with three of these (8x100) and haven't had any problems: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Screws+&+Fixings/d90/Steel+Anchors/sd2040/Lightning+Masonry+Bolt+/p23772 Drill hole, tighten up with a...

    stop hose kinking?

Thanks for the suggestions. I've located some 32mm waste pipe so I will try a short length of that over the kinked area close to the outlet next time I'm at the club. The thing I am a bit concerned about is that it might just lead to a kink at the end of the waste pipe, but it will be quick...

    stop hose kinking?

Also wondering whether wrapping duct tape around the first 30 cm or so of the hose might make it sufficiently sturdy to resist kinking...

    stop hose kinking?

Ah, nice idea to use something a bit sturdier but still with a bit of give where it connects to cover. Thanks. Not sure where I can get the sort of thing you describe though. I wonder if something like a washer outlet hose might work....

    stop hose kinking?

Evening all, At my local cricket club there are some pitch covers with hoses to drain the water away to the outfield. The hoses (31 mm external diameter, 25 mm internal) are fixed to an outlet on the gutter with a jubilee clip, like this. When the covers aren't in use the hoses are stored on...

Are patio slabs ok straight on to sharp sand?

Also with the right fall on the paving there should be no problem with drainage. Make sure it drains to a sensible place (i.e. not towards your house).

Are patio slabs ok straight on to sharp sand?

The Paving Expert page on bedding materials (http://www.pavingexpert.com/layflag3.htm) recommends a sand bed for units smaller than the ones you are planning. I would go with a 10:1 sand cement mix. Your landscaper could have lots of reasons for suggesting laying on sand only, and leaving open...

    Compost and my Tumbler

Ah, I see: I thought the clumps were the manure. I haven't used a tumbler, so don't know what effect that has so maybe wait and see if anyone here has some advice specific to that. If the material has been in there a while and you can break it apart with your fingers then you might want to try...

    Compost and my Tumbler

It looks like you have quite a bit of animal poo (do you have a herd of elephants?) so what you have there looks more like regular manure which could do with rotting down a bit more. Don't add too many leaves to the compost: they break down through a different process and if added in quantity...
