    Composters

It can be any size you like, really, though composting times will depend on how large it is and how full you can get it. If you only have a relatively small amount of waste and don't have much space you can easily knock something up of a size to suit. The norm is for each bay of a timber...

    Composters

I haven't used a tumble composter, but as I understand it you need to have a load of stuff to put in at once to get compost at anything like the speed they suggest. I find the plastic bins a bit useless really: as soon as you get heat in them you start to get condensation on the inside, which...

    flag splitter

Anyone got any experience of using a splitter (hydraulic or otherwise) for flags? I need to cut some 32x450x450 concrete flags and don't really want to risk life or limb with a power saw.

    Re-lay Paving slabs, heavy 3ft x 2ft x 2inch. 80 of them.

Paving expert is the best resource for all this kind of stuff, including stuff on lifting: http://www.pavingexpert.com/layflag1.htm On a personal note, I shifted about 10 of these slabs about 30 meters recently in preparation for some building work. I'm in pretty good shape I suppose and I...

    Laying patio

Thanks. This might give some relevant info, though it's mostly about working in bad weather, not bad weather afterwards. http://www.pavingexpert.com/faq_weather01.htm Personally I would try not to worry about it. Even though it's maybe not ideal, there's not much you can do about it now.

    Laying patio

Looks great. How did you cut the slabs for the inspection chamber? Also, did you have to raise or level the cover to match the paving? If so, how did you you do that? I'm curious as I have a similar project at home at the moment (paving up to/around two chambers).

2x4 for hanging gate on a wall, should it rest on the path?

About five years ago I fastened a 3x2 timber to the wall with 6 inch thunderbolts, with the timber raised off the ground, to hang a similar sized gate. Never had a problem with it.

    cement gone off in pack

I have some bags of cement left over from another (recent) job. Obviously a bit of moisture has got into one of the bags: it's gone off in one area. Am I still safe to use the rest of the bag on a paving project, or is it best to dump it? Ta.

    Garden Ideas???

You're welcome. Don't let it overwhelm you: it's just a garden. And it's clearly under control. Think about what you want from it (e.g. do you want somewhere to relax, somewhere full of colour, somewhere neat and easy to maintain, something which is productive etc.) and go from there. A great...

    Garden Ideas???

The first thing I would be tempted to do would be move the pots together into clumps. This will make them easier to water when the time comes, and increase the visual effect of them. Maybe try some more pots, with some at the back raised up so you get to see everything. If you can't stretch...

    Patchy Lawn Help

Well, in my experience a patch of different turf does blend in eventually. Really you just have to decide whether you want to look at flimsy grass for a while as the seed takes hold, or a bit of new turf which fills the gap right away but might be more lush than its surroundings.

    Patchy Lawn Help

You could do that, but turf from your own garden will probably be a better match in terms of colour and type of grass.

    detailing paving

Hi. I am planning some paving for my back garden. I'd like to use a simple slabs but some more interesting detailing along these lines http://www.pavingexpert.com/images/flags/pattern_stackbond_bands.jpg I was thinking of using 450x450 slabs with a close joint of 5 mm or so in between...

paving brick border - dry mix concrete or hardcore/sand?

IMO you are over engineering. No need for hardcore, or even cement really: http://www.pavingexpert.com/edging4.htm

New garden project - advice required please

Rotavating alone won't change the amount of clay in the soil. To improve the soil you need to mix in some other stuff like topsoil, sharp sand or leafmould. The area you are dealing with looks quite small: trying to control a rotavator in there is likely to be a right faff, with the...

how to fix batten to a concrete fence post

Aren't you going to have the same problem with the angle if you fasten a batten directly to the post? And you could use a bracket to fit a batten to the post, instead of a panel.
