    De humidifiers

One of my rooms was feeling a bit damp - I put the dehumidifier on full and left it on over night (windows and doors shut, room approx 30m cubed). It pulled out 4-5 litres a night for the first couple of nights, then dropped to 1L after about 4 nights.

Should I use plasterBoard In A Bathroom

Should be about £14-£15 for a 1.4 x 1m board or so. Ceramic screws work out at about 6p each (just stud in the same way as normal plasterboard, about 400mm separation). As you probabby gathered, I got mine from Wickes - if you go to their website they have one of their "how to"/"good idea"...

    Re-surfacing an old back passage

hmm, not sure that'd go with the slate walls, although the price is right :D I was thinking of normal concrete but with something cunning done at the end - like insetting slate chippings before it goes off so that there's an embedded coating on the surface...

Yes, kitchen countertops - concrete can look great if done properly. I'm getting ready to do some test castings - was just wondering if anybody had any experience?

    Joining Block Walls

Hi, I have an old shed that used to be a garage. It has a concrete base and the walls are made of concrete sheets (500mm x 1000mm approx) bolted together on 3 walls, with the 4th wall being a wooden garage door (so you could get the car in :) ) This wooden door has now rotted away to...

    Attic Firewall - old house

Erm, as far as I'm aware the house doesn't have any proper foundations - it's a old conversion - it just sort of sits on the first level of stone. Really.

    Re-surfacing an old back passage

Hi, I've got an ally around the back of the house, 15m long by 1m wide. It's made of shattered concrete and soil and looks a mess. Any tips for a cheap resurfacing? It's behind an old house in a natural stone area so anything i do needs to be in keeping. Seen any bargain...

    Attic Firewall - old house

Hi, I need to build a solid block firewall between two halves of my old house. I've got the blocks but after carrying them from the truck to the garden I've got scared that they'll be too heavy for my old walls! The walls are natural stone with lime and mortar, about 80 to 60...

    Window into new Entrance Door

Hi, I'm planning to open up an existing window into a new main doorway (interior to exterior). Other work in the house mean that I'm loosing my existing front door so I want to make a new one into my sittingroom. I think that one of the windows in the sittingroom was once a doorway...

    Building a Porch - facing a wall

Hi, I'm adding a small roofed porch to the front of my house - it'll be about wide 1.4m x 1m extending off the front of the house. The house is pretty old so I'm planning on building an inner single skin block wall and then facing it with local stone. (The wall will only be half height...

Should I use plasterBoard In A Bathroom

a lot of people say that it's best to avoid plasterboard in a room with high humidity such as the bathroom - instead aquapanel (Wickes brand) or some other cement board is recommended. This board is moisture (and water) resistant, unlike plasterboard which quickly falls apart if wet. I've...

Bracing a Joist for new Stairs

Thanks a lot! I've put the joist loosely in place and it doesn't look like there's going to be enough baring on the walls - about 4cm each end :-( So: Do I write this off as a newbie mistake and just buy longer joists (what baring is ideally reccomended) Or, am I as well off using a kind...

    Cost of Mains Connection

Hi, I'm having a new mains connection made to a new house. Anybody got any experience of the prices involved? I'm in the North West and the prices I've been quoted are between approx £4000 and £2300 depending on the delivery mode (overhead, underground etc.). This seems a lot compare...

Bracing a Joist for new Stairs

Hi Guys, Thanks very much for your help. I realised that there was too much info to just post pics so I've actually created a site! Here's the URL:- http://d.1asphost.com/Panmure/Housepics/ (ignore the word 'roof' at the top) It's not that complex though :D My plan is to...

Bracing a Joist for new Stairs

HI. I'm renovating a house and need to put a new stairwell in going from ground floor to the first floor. I need to strengthen the joist which the stair will lean on. What's the best way to do this? (a little detail: I'm actually re-opening an old stairwell so there is already a trimming...
