    Crumbling pointing

You could wait for a nice sunny day..... mix up the sand and cement while it'all dry (or use the premixed stuff. While the sun's out run a watering can around the gaps to be pointed so they're nice and wet inside... don't worry about getting water on the slabs, leave it for a bit and the...

HOW DO I HOLD A COMPOST BIN DOWN ??

Some have a lip around the bottom edge, either with or without holes. If yours is like this you can drive some long skewers into the ground to hold it in place. Some don't though, in which case you can still drill small holes around the edge and drive the skewers in at a slight angle...

ripples on my newly plastered walls!

Are the ripples quite close together, and 5-6 at a time? They could be 'tramlines' caused by the trowel skipping along the plaster :?: Or are they more likel rolling country side, and the surface is just not flat?

    Plastering

Not to my knowledge... I do remember the first couple of times i tried plastering, mixing up a whole load putting it in the board, then either spending so long trying to get it on the wall (and floor), it took far longer than i thought i would then looking at the board to find it had gone off...

    Plastering

When you mix up, add the powder to the bucket of water, not water to the bucket of powder. Mix it so it's sort of whipped cream consistancy. Don't mix up more than you can get on the wall in about 20minutes, or it'll set hard on the board rather than the wall! start with the smallest...

Plastering job quote - is it reasonable

Best thing to do is get some more quotes and compare them. At the end of the day, is down to whether YOU think it's reasonable. as most people will tell you, without actually seeing it........

foil plasterboard over old lath & plaster wall

If it is a cement board, it may be the cause of the damp... originally it would have been a lime mix, which is breathable, and allows and moisture to evaporate out of the walls, inside and out - cement will not allow this and so traps the moisure. If it were me, i'd get someone in to check...

foil plasterboard over old lath & plaster wall

Surley if is a lath and plaster wall, then the plaster will be lime based. If you cover it with gypsum you'll stop it being able to breath and trap any moisture in teh walls. Thisa will leasd to damp problems in the future. How old is the property?

Arr!, cheers that makes sence - And i learnt something useful - cheers! I guess in responce they'll all be face bricks, although the lower couple of courses, will in fact be hidden as on one side the ground is actually higher (hence the wall), but the bricks will hopefully all be reclaimed...

    drilling holes in slate

I've managed to get hold of some old slate roof tiles, in various states of repair... I'm wanting to use them for the roof of a covered bird table, but some of them will need to be cut, and drilled so they can be fixed. So, the question... Do i need a special drill bit to drill out the new...
