Beefing up roof joist for walking

125mm X 50mm C24 max span on a pitched roof 15 degrees with 400mm centres is just shy of 3 meters. Your max span is 1.6 but at 10 degrees so you're within the timbers limits. Definitely double up around the windows but it's not essential you double up elsewhere although as you say it's not going...

Only left 25mm gap above PIR

25mm will be fine. The gap is there incase any warm air from your room passes the insulation and hits the cold of your membrane and causes condensation. The gap along with eaves vents or similar to allow air into the gap clears the condensation. With breathable membrane this is less of a worry...

No paper tape or scrim used in cracked corner joints. Best way to fix.

I'd rake the cracks out to a couple mm depth, clean off and apply a good flexible caulk working it into the crack and smooth off after. Undercoat the caulk before your emulsion to avoid crazing or use the anti crazing caulk that's available now. It may return as an hairline crack in the future...

    Painting over Tape and joint

A tack rag or damp microfiber cloth is what I've always used after sanding. (y)

    Painting over Tape and joint

I've used similar paint from screwfix, no nonsense bare plaster paint. It's very good indeed and out of the tub is ready to go directly onto bare plaster be it skim, board, easifill or similar. It doesn't need watering down although if you want to stretch it a little more only add the...

    Getting paid on completion

Yeah good point id not considered that and definitely makes me see the trades side. I can only speak from what I normally would do which is on completion get trades account and sort code and pending good job within 48 hours pay online no hassle. Guess it doesn't always work like that. Anyway...

    Getting paid on completion

Believe me, unless I absolutely have to anymore I don't. No offence intended to any of you reputable trades on here just one man's opinion and a few bad experiences.

    Getting paid on completion

Okay so on that basis your happy if I pay for materials upfront and pay your labour charge 48 hours after completion to ensure its been installed correctly? Fine by me. I have faith my £1500 boiler from Vaillant is going to work, if it doesn't I have faith in my consumer rights and sales of...

    Getting paid on completion

That would be sold as seen obviously. A new car, I can take that for a test drive without payment no problems. Almost like testing your boiler installation works before payment. You could argue I can't test run TVs, cookers, washing machines etc but it's having the confidence paying upfront...

    Getting paid on completion

Speaking from a consumer standpoint I always pay a couple days after I like to see what I'm paying for actually works correctly for a couple day's without hiccup before I pay. I also find it funny. You trades people want paying straight away and are obviously ****ed if it isn't judging on the...

Panel fence - neighbour banked 3ft of soil against it.

Oh don't get me wrong I'd be incredible ****ed off to but give him one chance to remove it if he doesn't cooperate planning and the council would be next to go down official channels. Has he raised his levels leading upto 3 ft at your panels or just piled a load of soil against the fence 3 ft...

Panel fence - neighbour banked 3ft of soil against it.

I personally would be knocking on first thing asking him to remove the soil before his new found garden level collapses into my garden. Once more rain comes it won't be long before those panels give way. If he doesn't agree call planning first thing Tuesday as far as permission to raise ground...

Thanks mad that was my logic to I'd imagine once set hard the actual contents won't be escaping into the water anyways. I'm a worrier though so nice to hear other opinions. cheers (y)

sink tap threads don't line up

To update as I'm keen as hell I tried to 270 straight away it locked the pipes even with a full turn backwards and no leaks in over 2 weeks. concerned now though as old and cold mentioned the 270 doesn't appear to be wras approved. It's not going to be used for drinking just washing hands is...

sink tap threads don't line up

Thanks for all the advice. I'm at work at the moment they use loctite 270 for threads here but they're for bolts on trailers I've tested it on a thread it locks it in place for sure but not sure if it's water tight. Would save me buying some 577. Is 270 similar stuff? I may have to stop being...

sink tap threads don't line up

Hi folks thanks for your time. Doing the pipework for utility basin sink it's exposed pipework thought it'd look different. Anyhow the pipe threads don't line up using ptfe the hot left tap won't turn left anymore so its in position and the cold right isn't tight if I leave it as is. I've...

    Rafter top plate birdsmouth

We did 1/3 birdsmouth cut on our mono pitched roof. I'm sure I read somewhere that theoretically it can be cut more than this and not effect the roof strength something to do with the wall plate would need to be pushed out for it to split at the bearing plate and with a birdsmouth cut top and...
