ha ha ha... yeah!! I think you've all more or less confirmed what I suspected. This would be a waste of time. I will Freecycle it I think. I've given stuff away on it before - feels great! :D

    Finding an Electrician

The last time I tried to find an electrician I got quotes from four companies, and they were all outrageous. In the end I just left it till - tadaa! - I was going out with a spark. He did a couple of jobs for me that I'd had saved up literally for years... Anyway, he's moved on and now I...

    Order of Works?? Eek!

I'm about to buy a top floor flat and do it up. I don't need to live there while the work is ongoing, but I do need to plan it out, and I'm a bit stuck! It's a medium-sized one bedroom flat, which currently has a galley kitchen off the lounge, a decent sized bathroom with a wooden false...

Selling the stuff I rip out

I'm about to embark on a biggish project, and as I go I'll be ripping out ... 1. one carpet - about 4.5 x 4.2 m - that's in pretty okay condition 2. a three piece bathroom suite, not ancient but not new either 3. full kitchen; sink, cooker and old units 4. big mirrored fitted...

    Howdens kitchens

I'm glad to hear all this. On my kitchen I dealt with B&Q, who were a nightmare. After it was too late to do anything about it I was recommended to go with Howdens next time...

    Painting skirtings and doors

After years of being lazy about this I've finally given in and started doing it properly, and I have to admit - it does pay off. First wash all the old paint with Sugar Soap. Then if there's ropey looking bits sand them (otherwise don't bother). Then use a proper undercoat for gloss...

    Painting on new plaster

I have painted over fresh plaster twice, both with great results. In the first case it was a bathroom, and my plasterer recommended I seal the wall with PVA glue diluted with water. I forget now what the ratio was, it may have been two to one water to PVA. Then I painted over two coats of...

    Fixing things to rubbishy walls

yep, I am using the right drill bit and setting. it's still very difficult to get purchase into the bricks though. they're still censoring that very mild word that rhymes with 'happy' by the way. I just wish they'd replace it with something spelt correctly. Makes me look illiterate... :(

    Fixing things to rubbishy walls

thanks for the tips. No, it's not plasterboard, it's just very very old plaster. It crumbles to a grey dust when I try and drill it, and bits just trickle out of the holes. I can't afford to replaster. Completely out of the question. Whenever I try drilling deeper - into the masonry -...

    Uneven Surface

Can you nail things into the surface? If so then hardboard. Before going ahead, read up on it, there's a few rules to follow. Won't post them all unless it's actually a goer....

    Fixing things to rubbishy walls

The plaster in my house is pretty knackered, and every time I try to fix something to it the proces takes frustrating hours as the shelves - or whatever - gradually slide back off again, leaving a big hole, and I have to start from scratch. All very funny no doubt... The problem is that...
