What is wrong with you, tool makers dont all work in tool rooms i worked for a small company just so happened i work mostly on tool press,s your talking about big concern,s like british leyland and the like,s from your generation thought you would be intelligent after all you have qualification,s.

You could fasten a 2x1 battern on the wall under the top and bottom shelf then just screw threw the sides into the battern then just paint the battern same colour as shelf.

Hi there 5 days seems too long for paint to dry, me personally would take the paint off and do it again with some new paint, you can always get a roll of the sticky carpet protector so not to ruin the carpet, screwfix or B&Q sells it hope this helps.
