Sub floor on extension - concrete or floorboards?

In Scotland suspended timber floors must now be insulated to 100mm of fibreglass equivalent. No idea if this applies to England and Wales however.

    education and quacilifations

Except the point is there was a claim of three years for the "academic" side of an electrician. There is more material in a two year A level Physics, Chemistry or Maths than needed for an electrician and mostly you do three of those in two years. Also as I pointed out it is six years period...

    education and quacilifations

That is still far to long. It only takes three years to get a degree at University for heavens sake and the material covered is far more complex and wider. I have all the materials at home to assist me in my DIY and there is no way on earth that it would take me three years to learn all that...

    education and quacilifations

I have never heard so much rubbish in all my life. Really seven years!!! That is more that it takes to qualify as a doctor or dentist, are you really saying that it requires more experience and learning to qualify as an electrician than a doctor or dentist?

Fitting skirting board where there is no plaster

And if you are really worried about the damp you could always add a waterproofing additive to the cement.

    Advice on wardrobe doors

Concealed hinges of the types used in kitchens and wardrobes come in many different types. The standard type expect a carcase for the door to close against and cover the full width of the carcase. Different thicknesses of carcase require depending on the make of hinge different hinges and/or...

Is there a tool that will allow me to...

That is simple rubbish and bares no relationship with the definition of cut. For example scissors cut using a shear force and not friction, are you going to claim that is not cutting?. Anything that separates an object into two cuts, it is the very definition of the word, specifically from the...

Is there a tool that will allow me to...

[/url] Hum while I don't condone the use of a wood blade in an angle grinder the article said the angle grinder was only for use in grinding and not cutting. Why then have every angle grinder I have purchased come with at least one cutting disc for either metal or stone and sometimes both?

Taking half an inch off door

Well I admit to never having cut cherry but I have never seen that with a new bit on oak, ash, beech, sycamore, softwood, MDF, chipboard or plywood. An blunt, old or damaged bit yes, but never a new bit. If I ever need to cut cherry then I know to use an up/down bit :)

Taking half an inch off door

So every job you do is the absolute best you could possibly do? At no time do you ever do something that is perfectly good enough but would take less time and hence be cheaper than doing the best possible? I note that I have been criticized in this very forum for using a finger jointer and...

    Advice on wardrobe doors

Yes but you need to buy the right hinges. Use Google and search around a bit and you will find what you are looking for. Whether it is a good idea on a full height wardrobe is another matter.

Taking half an inch off door

Fair point but you can get a decent for DIY 1/2" router for well under a £100. Both my brother and myself as DIY'ers have decent for DIY 1/2" routers. I was under the impression that a climb cut was down to the direction of feed, nothing to do with the depth of cut. Limiting the depth of cut...

Taking half an inch off door

But won't get as clean cut as a router. Yes and how many DIY'ers have an industrial planer? Utter twaddle. You never have to move the batten. With a softwood or moulded door, a good 1/2in router bit and a decent router you can do it in a single pass. Trust me I have done it many times...

Taking half an inch off door

No slower than using a planer and for more controllable. A softwood or hollow door could be done in one pass and a hardwood in two. Most of the time will be in the setup. No messing about scoring surfaces, and if you are going to clamp a batten to guide the saw, then you might as well break out...

Taking half an inch off door

I would second the router. Use a 1/2" router with a 50mm long 12.7mm bit as used for fitting kitchen worktops and clamp a straight edge to the door. You get a perfect right angle, straight cut with control as to where you want it. If it is painted/varnished already use a bit of brown paper to...

    Increasing joist height

In my experience they are often just as cheap if not cheaper. All depends what you are buying, where you live, is it on offer and what delivery charges might exist.

    Increasing joist height

They are I believe all pretty much the same. I purchased them from Wickes because they would also deliver the T&G loft panels at the same time as well and some extra fibreglass rolls for the areas not boarded out. I have boarded three lofts in my time. My sisters flat and my house using...

    Kitchen Cabinet shelf clips

You could try these ones, they screw into a 5mm hole, instead of being a push fit. http://comptools.co.uk/store/hafele-shelf-support-plug-for-216-hole-150-load-p-8194.html As for sturdyness, these are diecast metal and four of these can take a 150kg load. Don't believe there is a minimum...
