    Restoring solid wood doors

Varnish/waxed, but thinking about it I don't think a repairs going to be too succesful with that finish. Painting would hide a multitude of sins.

    Restoring solid wood doors

Hi, I have a full set of original, matching, solid wood doors in my 1920's home. Unfortunatly some of them are not in good shape, either the tops or bottoms have been planed at odd angles to match the skewed frames. The frames are being replaced as part of renovation work, so that they are...

    Trying to source Quarry Tiles

Just to follow up, I ended up getting tiles direct from Ruabon in Hafod. They were able to come up with a tile exactly as I wanted.

'Ruabon' quarries from bradford - any good?

Don't know about the ones you have from Bradford, but I picked up some 6x6x1" Ruabon Red Quarries direct from the factory at Haford. Both they and my builder told me they would need sealing. Maybe the importer or stockist has had them sealed.

    Blocked Fireplace vent

Hi, During recent decorating and renovation I uncovered a bricked up fireplace in a bedroom. There was a vent fitted (clogged with paint though) and through the hole in the brickwork where the vent was I can see piles of debris, bits of bricks, mortar etc. The chimney has a flue liner...

    Trying to source Quarry Tiles

Hi, I'm desperatly trying to source approx 100 Red or Terracotta Quarry tiles. They can be 150x150mm or 6x6" or 5 3/4 x 5 3/4" They must be 25mm or 1" thick They must have a porosity rating of at least 5% (so no sealed, treated, or frost resistant ones) I'm looking for NEW...

    Metric and Imperial sizes

I'm trying to match up some old Randlay Salop quarry tiles, but there is some confusion over what size they are (or are meant to be) Tiles were produced under the Randlay Salop name from around 1896 to 1916, our house was built during the 1920's. So I assumed these were 6x6x1" standard...

    Tile Porousity

Cheers, makes sense. They're going onto a limecrete floor so I actually need them to be porous.

    Tile Porousity

Hi, I'm trying to test if my quarrys tiles are porous or not. I've got a new tile from a local supplier and the orginal 1920's ones for comparison. When I splash water on them it doesnt appear to soak into either of them, not straight away anyway. I tried half filling a glass with...

    Refurbishing Tiles

Hi, I am having a new limecrete floor laid, and would like to have the original 87 year old red quarry tiles relaid on top. Problem is they are in a poor condition, dirty and with some paint splashes. Is there anywhere that will refurbish them for me (if thats even possible?) They are all...

    Sourcing old floorboards

All sorted, a Timber Merchant called Harlow Bros had a branch just down the road from where I work (Burton) so I was able to pop in at lunchtime. They were very helpful and able to machine some flooring to my exact requirements and at a reasonable cost.

    Sourcing old floorboards

I don't think they have shrunk, although the central heating pipes run directly underneath. Widthwise they seem a tight fit, although it is of course possible. When I say they were 115mm wide I measured the surface area without the tongue, so could well be 119mm with the tongue.

    Sourcing old floorboards

No doesn't have to be old boards, it's only to repair a small patch of 6 115mm boards on a landing area, and it's going to be covered with carpet. I thought about trying the reclamation yards, will try and ring around a few in the week. Another option I thought about was to use the more...

    Sourcing old floorboards

Hi, I need to replace a few floorboards in a 1920's Semi, they are 22mm thick by 115mm wide T&G. I don't seem to be able to find anywhere that does that size, and I can't find anywhere open on a weekend either (which is the only opportunity I have to go get some) Any recommendations...

    Rosemary Vent Tiles

Excellent many thanks. I was worried about having to cut the roof batons, but looks like I can get an adapter that will fit through the batons and attach to the round 100mm ducting.

    Rosemary Vent Tiles

Hi, Could someone advise me what would be a suitable vent tile for fitting with old, narrow, Rosemary tiles circa 1920's I need to vent an loft mounted extractor, ducting is 100mm. No possibility to vent it under the eaves as the loft floor is 7 or 8ft up from the eaves. Thanks Ben

    Plastering over chased in cabling

Sorry for the lack of any pictures. I did call the electrician back for this, he agreed some were a bit shallow and has gone around all the chases and re-done them a bit deeper, minimum 5mm but mostly 10mm clearance over the capping now. Should have been done right to begin with but fair...

    Plastering over chased in cabling

Sadly yes already paid. The business was highly rated on TrustaTrader, the job was done on time, to budget, everything works and was certified. So I assumed the job was done properly. It's only afterwards that I've started noticing things that have made me question the quality of work. The...
