    Brown stain on ceiling

Thanks all. I believe I have found the problem. There is a cracked wall tile bottom right, under the shower. Even though I have previously sealed this it is leaking from there as I have taken the side off the bath and watched underneath while someone is in the shower. It doesn't happen when...

    Brown stain on ceiling

This morning just as I was leaving for work I noticed a brown stain on the living room ceiling, which is below the bathroom. Almost certainly a leak I would have thought, although the ceiling was dry. Had a very quick look under the bath - no obvious signs there although did notice the grout...

    Flickering bathroom spotlight

Hi we have a spotlight unit in our bathroom containing 3 bulbs. Some months ago 1, then 2 of the bulbs stopped working and replacing them did not seem to work either. We are left with 1 working bulb which always flickers. It can come on, stay on anywhere between 1 second and 5 minutes and be on...

    Bay window ceiling dropped

Hi sorry for the delay, here is a pic which attempts to show the problem. So the small sub ceiling bit is what I am referring to here, to which the curtain rail is attached. This is what has come away and can be pushed up by hand (you can just make out the level of the piece of wood the rail is...

    Bay window ceiling dropped

Thanks. I will get some internal pics put up. This was my assumption as to what has happened. The question is, can anything be done to remedy this? I'm not exactly sure what would now be above the ceiling exactly. Thanks again.

    Bay window ceiling dropped

Hi we had an upstairs conversion done a while back and one of the problems which has come to light since concerns the small ceilings above the bay windows in our downstairs rooms. In summary we had the upstairs roof removed and gable ends built front and back. I have tried to illustrate this...

Toilet isolating valve turned, now dripping

I went to change the refill valve /arm in the cistern, about the limit of my diy skills. So underneath the cistern we have a flexi hose with an isolating valve attached. I turned the screw head in this a quarter turn to shut off the water in preparation for removing the arm inside, then I...

Laying self adhesive vinyl tiles in kitchen - concrete floor

Hi - after a bit of advice. We currently have lino down in our kitchen on top of a concrete floor - it's been down for years so we have bought some vinyl self adhesive tiles which I was planning to stick directly to the concrete after pulling the old lino up. The main reason for this is there...

    Oven element blown, fan question

Thanks for the reply. I don't think it is that, because - a) occasionally the fan will kick in straightaway, then there is no smoke. We only get smoke when the fan doesn't kick in. b) this was exactly what had been happening with the previous element. I'm hoping there's no link between the...

    Oven element blown, fan question

Here is a picture of what I am on about regarding the burnt insulation. TBH looking at the fan motor I reckon it would be worth just taking it off initially and giving it a jolly good clean and see how that goes before forking out £50-60 for a new one.

    Oven element blown, fan question

One other thing I keep meaning to mention is when I replaced the element last week I noticed all the insulation around the back of the fan area and motor appeared to be burnt, well it looked burnt anyway, I wasn't sure if it was just dirt but I think it was scorched. Would this have been a...

    Oven element blown, fan question

Blimey. Thanks for the advice. Now here's the thing, so tonight we turn the oven on, no fan comes on, leave it 10 mins to heat up, opened the oven door to check, fan still not on but plenty of smoke in the oven! Eventually after a few more minutes the fan kicks in and the smoke clears and all...

    Oven element blown, fan question

OK I sent off for the proper element as opposed to a cheaper one, as it had the tags spaced correctly. Of course once I got the back off the oven it transpired that it wouldn't have mattered as there was just a gap for the tags to pop through instead of individual holes. Anyway.....all seems to...

    Oven element blown, fan question

Thanks to all for their advice. One final question, I have sourced a replacement part from espares (http://www.espares.co.uk/product/es555487/fan-oven-element) which I don't think is an original part but seems highly rated, however I notice it says the tags are 18mm apart whereas my original one...

    Oven element blown, fan question

Well I wondered the same, whether the fan waited for the element to heat up a little bit first, which would make sense. However the wife swears it used to come on immediately. The fan doesn't run constantly now - obviously only when we turn the oven on.

    Oven element blown, fan question

I don't think so, you could turn the oven on, and it would be virtually silent for 10 minutes. You could open the door and it was just the light on. Then after about 10 minutes you heard it fire into life. Having said all of that I am not sure what/where the oven top vent fan is!
