Wet rot wooden lintel in damp cellar

Hello all, I am doing some works in my old victorian damp cellar. Whilst working there, I have noticed this lintel over the old coal chute arch, which is not is used anymore. The lintel is actually wood and suffers quite some wet rot, especially on the left side. I can almost peel off bits of...

    Ceiling Joist Construction

Thanks that's helpful. Agree, unfortunately that is not possible, as the middle room is 4 steps higher. The floor level of the outrigger is offset by a bit, so that brick wall actually just goes straight up all the way.

    Ceiling Joist Construction

Hello All, I am looking for some advice from someone familiar with the construction of old victorian terraced houses. I have posted my question in another forum already, but have not gotten quite the response I was after yet. Long story short: I want to know how the ceiling of my outrigger is...

Add a battery to my solar?

@op, hypothetically do you have more roof space to make the array bigger? 2.5kw system is rather small IMO. A battery setup needs to be installed correctly with a good quality lithium phosphate. Your ASHP will require a lot, so it would need to be decent sized system. That does require some...

    Insulation under floor

If I understand it correctly, then the answer to your questions is yes. And it is really important to secure the rockwool, to allow for sufficient ventilation underneath on airbrick level. I am doing something similar in my victorian terrace and am using some netting and a cheap electric...

Advise on fixing metal fire surround

I have used JB Weld to seal up a cast iron fire surround. Mine just had an old rusted hole about 5cmx10cm. So I JBwelded a steel sheet to cover and painted it. I don't know if it would hold up your surround, but that stuff is very strong! Use gloves! Once it's dry it should be safe this is...

    Junction box for moving socket

I've purchased Hager as well for a severed cable, but they are quite large. End up using a QuickWire JB, which is very space efficient and MF. See right picture here.

    Adding rodding access - help

Let me add a bit of context, as it is not so straight forward (at least to me). I have had a bedroom converted into a bathroom. This obviously means new drainage etc and building control approval. The works have already been completed and my installer is looking to get a building control...

    Adding rodding access - help

Hello everyone, I just had a visit from my LABC for some plumbing works, mainly inspecting external waste pipe runs. The works they were meant to inspect were all fine, but annoyingly they have noticed some other close but unrelated waste pipes that were not up to regulation. Some minor points...

    Replacement Smoke Alarms

Last time I checked, they do not. But my level of knowledge might be out of date, as I was unware that you can now fit RF inserts straight into the alarm module, and keep the old wired base. in that case yes no need to change base! Well thought-out Aico.

    Replacement Smoke Alarms

Yes it does. Aico does RF for each series afaik, and you can mix and match. However in order to link the hardwired interlinked ones with RF ones, you need to swap the base on one of the hardwired ones (for the signal) and then for all the other RF once you need the RF base in addition to the...

    Alarms - Mains Wired, Interconnected

Last post on this... I finally managed to finish this project, and quite proud of my work. Installed 3 smoke alarms + 2 heat alarms (all Aico) over 4 floors, all interlinked and mains wired. Had to open up a small bit of wall in four different places and drill through 3 noggins that were in the...

    Alarms - Mains Wired, Interconnected

Finally had some time to work on this again. Cleared out a lot of the debris. Ended up not using the Hager, but instead a Wago with line for the 3-core and a quick wire for the 2.5m T&E. After pushing everything inside the void it actually looks quite decent.. no significant strains etc. I've...

I ended up using a small bit of washing up liquid, wow what a difference it made! Thanks all.

    Yellow 77 or alternatives

I am aware and note that you have suggested it already too me. I have done it the hardcore mains wired way now, so here we are.

    Yellow 77 or alternatives

Thanks all. hahaha. Certainly latex sheathing friendly in case that actually exists... It is for my mains wired interconnected fire alarms, which I am in the process of installing on every floor of my house.

    Yellow 77 or alternatives

Hello all, I want to pull a light wire through an extremely narrow wall space in between two wooden studs. There is about 15mm width (but +100mm depth) and to make matters worse, there are already 3 cables going through this space. And to make it even more challenging, the cable I want to run...

    Copper pipe damage

Probably overkill, but I went with a Gebo repair clamp specifically for copper pipes... seems rock solid. Spoke to my plumber, and he was not too worried about it actually. Given that the area is accessible he recommended to check it once a year or so. Thanks for everyone's response.

    Any advice on hiring scaffolding

like I said.. is was requested in the written quote from my electrician. I don't know if it is common or not (apparently not), I am just providing this information and you (or the op) can choose to ignore it. really simple.
