Socket Wiring Advice - Part Dux!

Yup, I can poke around with a screwdriver and move stuff. I cut out the middle lath hoping it was just a thick layer and it will all fall off inside the void.. but no chance unfortunately. I've already finished the new socket 4 the same way and it worked perfectly fine. What would you think...

Socket Wiring Advice - Part Dux!

After spending a weekend ripping out the old flooring and dismantling 3 large wardrobes, I finally got to work on this. Hit a roadblock though… whilst moving socket 3 out of the skirting board and over to the right closer to the door, I found that the void between the studs is completely filled...

    Bay window condensation

That's interesting thanks for sharing, I have exactly the same situation, although my windows are upvc, but at least 15 years old. The major difference between the rooms are the radiators. In my lounge I have a 1.8m wide 3 column radiator covering almost the bay and in the bedroom I have a 1.2m...

How difficult is it to install outside front door lights?

I am actually looking at a very similar project at my house. Depending on where you live, I would probably not leave the lights on all night. For energy efficiency, but I personally would also feel like your house would stand out (and attract unwanted attention) if it were the only one...

    Dimmer Switch Type Alternatives

Just to close this off, I've gone with a varilight touch dimmer. It looks like a regular rocker, but just has a small tap for on/off and you can dimm by pressing the top or bottom part. I am quite happy with this as it fires up smooth, but much quicker than the other one. I've actually made a...

Socket Wiring Advice - Part Dux!

ahh love it when one project organically growths into five... while I have access to the floor... unrelated follow-up question: The lower left corner of this 1st floor bedroom (so the area between socket 1 and 2) sits above my front door entrance. I currently have battery operated PIR lamp, but...

Socket Wiring Advice - Part Dux!

Ah that is indeed the much better solution, doing away with JBs completely. Thanks for that.

Socket Wiring Advice - Part Dux!

Onto the next... I am getting new flooring put down in my bedroom and as such I will need to strip the existing carpet down to the original floorboards. Whilst I have access, I want to wire a new socket onto the existing ring final and potentially cleanup a few things given that these areas...

Solar PV - [not] Great Expectations!

I think this depends if you have a decent export tariff. There is an argument that financially and environmentally export is better than use of solar diverter for hot water heating. Quite interesting video about this here

    Dimmer Switch Type Alternatives

Thanks, it's the dimmer. I had the circuit hooked up to a simple rocker switch for some decorating and they illuminate instantly at 100%. This is actually exactly the switch I have. The rocker is used for the extractor fan, so ignore that bit. I think I still have a spare Varilight pro module...

Best way get rid of moss on roof

I would recommend Green Clear from SmartSeal. It is advisable to wait for a dry period, ideally the moss should be bone dry, so it has the highest chance of soaking up the moss remover. Then wait a few days or even weeks and it should die out and eventually with rain wash off. Be careful though...

    Dimmer Switch Type Alternatives

Hello, I have recessed dimmable LED spot lights in my bathroom. They are all on one circuit so there is no zoning. They are operated by an ordinary rotary dimmer switch. Everything is working well, however given the nature of the room there is a lot of on/off switching for short periods. It has...

    Drainage in victorian terrace

I have had this done now properly by a plumber. We've done a CCTV drainage survey and it turns out this gulley is completely collapsed and everything was going straight into the ground. Plumber cleaned up the piping (one was even redundant) and rerouted everything into the SVP. I think it's a...

Chasing for data cable - conduit?

Epilogue: After a 2 week holiday I gave this another go again. Tried all above, I even stuck a few glow sticks through, just to confirm which of the two holes I drilled was the right one... they were to weak to reveal anything. After trying for an entire day, just about to give up and make plans...

For those on Octopus as energy supplier - free power

I think GaryDoesSolar has a good video explaining this. All about flattening the curve (peak at evening and low in early morning), but your assumptions are probably correct. well, not sure as long as you have critical mass. I know people on octopus, who do not have smart meters for some reason...

    Solar Panels - Removable?

Might be case dependent. Solar installers do not force you to use their scaffolders, so you need to check if their quote included the cost of scaffolding. My installer offered it, but I organised scaffolding on my own and saved GBP 850 for a 12 week hire, so not an insignificant amount. The 12...

Chasing for data cable - conduit?

mhmm so I went with the chimney void Idea, but it did not quite work out exactly. This portion of the building only has two floors, so in theory the chimney construction should something like this. Via the loft, I drilled a 45deg downward sloping hole (to avoid a strong cable bend) and fed the...

    Solar Panels - Removable?

I would definitely get the works done before. Delaying the solar installation by a few weeks/months will not make much difference in your payback, but getting scaffolding up twice can add a year. I had roof works done the week before the panels were installed, if you plan early it is perfectly...

Chasing for data cable - conduit?

Yep, I've used those already in another post suggested by Murdochcat. I cannot find them with 25mm depth, so If I use 35mm I need to actually chase into the brickwork. I will think about it as it will indeed be much cleaner than just slapped somewhere above.
