    Badly installed tiles

I would never lay tiles on Chipboard, even marine ply needs much more support than standard joists give. If you want tiles then start from scratch with cross members between the joists, marine ply in place of chipboard then tile with flex adhesive - and even then the slightest mistake in...

Smart meter sizes, and suppliers stipulating one must be fitted

Remember that you don't just need space for the meter, the current (Smets 2) units need a Comms Hub which sits on top of the electricity meter.

30mm rigid XPS (GG300) under 14mm engineered flooring

If I follow the link posted there is a “Talk to us” button - did you use it and what did they say? Interested as I may do the same.

Slate hearth on engineered hardwood floor

I grew up with open fires and always wonder why people prefer them to simple, clean gas or electric. They generally don’t spit embers out onto your floor either - was it sycamore that was notorious for this.

Need to put 5 core 25mm swa cable through collapsed duct

Duct collapses generally happen when backfilling, was a rope put in at installation and was it checked before you paid the contractor? A cobra may help, then a camera if that doesn’t work. Water jetting may clear it if it is silted, other than that - dig.

Toilet not flushing well, may be syphonic

I think I have worked it out, doesn’t appear to be anything to do with the siphon in the pan but the siphon in the cistern. Air is leaking into the siphon through the hole that the plunger moves through in sufficient volume to disrupt the siphonic action so flushing only uses about 1/3 of the...

How to Connect Multiple CAT6 Ethernet Cables

Be wary if you get ftth, the new hub had one fewer port. Bu**er, I was using all 5!

    Sky box in a cupboard?

It is called "intellectual property". Even when you buy a CD/DVD you are only buying a limited right to view the recording (e.g. no commercial use) and you do not own the content. Sky is selling a right to view subject to certain conditions which include having a Sky subscription. Some of...

Shaver Charging in Bathroom Shaver socket but not 3 to 2 pin adapters

Many years ago I bought a bluetoth GPS receiver to use with a pda running TomTom software. It came with a charger with a two pin plug (!) and a two pin to two pin adaptor. Forget which was round it was but the adaptor was necessary in one of UK/France but not the other. Pin spacing was...

Lamppost cable. What are they for?

Pressure can be "absolute" (zero is absolute vacuum) or "gauge" (zero is one atmosphere, approx 1 bar/15 psi). Can't be bothered to quote it in lb/sq ft (should really be pounds force per square foot), pascals or butterflies per acre. Using gauge pressure you can have a negative pressure of up...

Interesting thread and a little "mention of twin socket rating" well sort of inference, if you like.

The heat arises in high resistance points and these are (1) where the wires are connected and (2) where the plug pins contact the socket conductors. I have only ever had problems where the plug makes poor contact with the socket and it tends to be one pin only where both carry the same current...

Interesting thread and a little "mention of twin socket rating" well sort of inference, if you like.

There is a thread from many years ago discussing this, as an engineer by training I struggle with the idea that a product can be released onto the market which is capable of having two 13 A loads connected but is not safe if you do that AND there is nothing telling the general public that the...

    Bent pin - Kenwood

Looks like a mincer attachment to me, IIRC the pin stops the steel mincer plate from rotating and the main part is a softer casting. Probably a new part from Kenwood if you can't get it out.

Bad brickwork? What are your thoughts?

Don't blame the bricks, we built an extension in the 90s with imperial thickness bricks and the length was very consistent as was the thickness. They were about 10mm or so shorter than the original bricks the house was built with.

    Levelling a sloping wall

What he said Most base units are made with the back inset by 50mm or so to create a void for services so just cut back the sides to allow the unit to sit correctly with the correct depth at the top for the worktop.

Remove alarm - Panel Marked ZX 901

We have one of these installed, looks ancient and we are not using it. Alarm box, 4-5 sensors and external bell box. How do I decommission and remove without disturbing the neighbours too much? No idea what the code relates to but not for this alarm.
