    Virgin PC protecter

It's not especially good. I would dump it. I've been using Avira Free Antivirus ever since AVG got bloated, and it's been excellent. I use Firefox with Adblockplus and WOT plugins for browsing. I haven't had a problem in 3 years.

    Vista won't load new program

I think you need to right click on the installer.exe and select 'run as administrator' to install it. Once it has installed, if it won't run properly, you may need to set the program.exe to run under administrator permissions as well. I think you may be able to do this at the shortcut it puts...

Yet another bathroom extractor fan question...

I think we're misunderstanding each other somewhere for some of this, at least... Yes. It's on a spur, and yes, fused down to 13A. I've just had another look (at home now) it's isolated with an FCU. I'll have another look at the Wiki. All I could find was the standard 'fan into lighting...

Yet another bathroom extractor fan question...

@ riveralt... As regards a three pole isolation switch, I was thinking that since the existing two pole switch isolates the entire supply to the heater in the bathroom, it would be possible to connect the fan on the same side as the heater before the pull switch and timer, isolating...

Yet another bathroom extractor fan question...

I'm wanting a timed extractor fan in the bathroom. I want the fan to be switched seperately from the lights, using a seperate pullcord - I don't need it to come on every time the light is switched on, and for noise and energy-saving reasons would prefer it didn't. There's already a window in...

New light fitting and Energy saving lamp

Just asking out of interest - does this imply a 'problem' that can be/should be remedied by (for example) replacing the switch cable? The low energy lights in my house did the same until I had a complete rewire of the lighting circuit. I assumed it was a faulty cable somewhere...

Economy 7 water tank issue: immersion or timer?

I had a Grassline E7 timer with a sticky clock. I could hear it ticking, but it would sometimes just stick on or off and the dial would stop going round. I dismantled it and used silicone lube on the plastic gears inside, which helped for a while. The battery in the Grasslin is soldered into the...

    NOW! That‘s What I Call Software. 1.

If you are using Firefox, there are a whole host of useful addons which can add to your security... WOT (web of trust) provides a useful indication of how safe a site might be to visit before you actually go there. Adblock Plus blocks adverts, some of which can be images linked to spyware...

    Downlight circuit in extension

450W to light one room? Blimey! We use less than that to light our entire house, including the shed, loft and garden... Sorry - I just had to say it.

    Washing Machine on E7

Our old washing machine died last week - we've replaced it with a Beko WM5120, which seems to have good reviews and cost less than £200. It has a delayed-start feature, to allow it to be used overnight. We use an Economy 7 tariff (for a wet storage heating system), so it would make sense to run...

12V G4 Capsule Light Bulb - LED replacement?

Sorry BAS - didn't see your reply. Those mini-CFLs look just the ticket. I had no idea they came in that size. Thank you.

12V G4 Capsule Light Bulb - LED replacement?

Did you try that search before jumping on me? I did, and I can't see them! Forget that - just figured it. Firefox and Adblock Plus conspiracy... Thanks...

12V G4 Capsule Light Bulb - LED replacement?

I have a bedside light which takes a 20W capsule halogen bulb. One of these: The lamp looks a bit like this: Does anyone know if a direct replacement low energy (LED?) bulb is available for this lamp? It doesn't need to be bright - I only use it to find stuff early in the morning...

    Two way switching.

mmmm... didn't realise that was a swear word!

    Two way switching.

No, that's fine BAS - it's a reasonable question. I did look, and found an image that made sense to me. This one: Some of the coloured images on the same page I found less useful, because they were too specific. To be honest, I think what I ended up doing was over-thinking the...

    Two way switching.

I thought I understood this, but I am not sure I do, now... I have a shed with a door at each end, and I want to fit two way switches by each door so I can switch the light on and off from either door. Because of the layout of the shed, I have the power supply near to one switch, and the...

    New Supplier inherits Broadband problem.

It might not be that simple... When I had problems with my broadband, the first thing I did was to contact my ISP (Virgin), who referred me to BT. BT passed me to Openreach. Openreach did a remote test on the line, declared it satisfactory and told me that since there was no fault, it would...

Boost your broadband speed by 7Mbps for £30.00

Hi chainsaw_masochist... My line comes in through the window of a bedroom from a pole outside the house, so it was pretty obvious what was going on. I don't know what to advise you about finding where the line comes into your parent's home. The GPO box looks like this: Mine was...
