    Light fitting inside partition wall

Check the instructions for the light, there is probably a clearance between the light and the plasterboard and unless the wall is unusually thick there is unlikely to be enough clearance.

    Lifting flooring

When you re-bard you should aim to have joints over the joists if possible, it is not the end of the world if you can't with T&G all round boards except at the edges which is why the builders put them at the edge.

Flush mounting of sockets and switches?

All the dry lining boxes I have used have a lip which sits on the surface of the board. I tend to set this into the plasterboard so it is flush. Would make this situation look much better

    Lifting flooring

The noggins are to stiffen the floor, they don't really carry any load. The joists carry the floor loading. 100x50 (4"x2" in imperial) as suggested by Ree is fine for noggins. If you look at the wall edge you will see where the builders put noggins in, don't go smaller than that and you...

Where to put a newel post?

Whose Newels/spindles are you intending to use? Burbidge run a design service and help line for theirs. Is that a made up string?

    London underground cabling

Purple is the LSH stuff that came in in the 90s following KinsX. First contract we had that used it was signed before the stuff was released to the marker. Fibre cable can be any colour, normally black like the Model T Ford.

We have a Samsung American style fridge freezer about 10 years old, it has the water chiller and ice producer In the freezer part. We have a modern house with plastic water pipes and in some of the stud walls the pipes move with water pressure, in particular the pipe supplying the fridge and...

    Recommendations for tiling layout please

The tiles don't create the brick pattern, the tiler does. I presume you want "stretcher bond". If you do then remember that vertical joins will be in different places on different courses and plan with that in mind. If you want the tiles to finish just under the sockets then measure down...

Earthing the gas supply pipe into the house

You could replace with iron (or a gas safe fitter could) but that would still need bonding. AFAIK you cannot use plastic for gas in a building - think about what happens in a fire.

    PE magazine

Lost its direction - did that years ago, it is an organisation funded by engineers but run by employers of engineers - when will my colleagues learn that this is not a route to riches. Have not seen this in PE and typeface looks different - are there two different PE magazines?

    Filling radiator holes in tiling

The pipe expands and contracts so the grout will start disintegrating. We have one done that way and one with chromed plastic covers around the pipes. Never notice the covers, do notice where the grout has cracked.

    Lifting flooring

1 - doesn't it say in your first post - it come in 18 and 22mm (possibly sizes in between) 2 - Not being green implies older house (the green is a waterproofing that allows the builder to put the floor down before they put the roof on) but there should be no wiring within 50mm of the top of...

Metro/Subway Tiling - bathroom walls marked independently?

I treat each wall independently. BUT . . . . For brick pattern the corners need to look right so you have to consider the whole room together and see what looks right. You don't want two quarter tiles together just above 2 3/4 tiles when you could have had the brick bond running round...

    Lifting flooring

[/url] No - You need something with a cutting dept at least equal to the board thickness. Most circular saws have adjustable cuts and you set it to the board thickness so you won't cut any cables or pipes. Try cutting out a piece across a joist and if it lifts out easily then they are not...

    Lifting flooring

It might not be that simple . . . . . . . Panels may be glued down, they may also be glued together at the edges. If so it probably won't be re-usable. Checking how many fixings are in each panel will give you a clue. How old the house is will also give a clue. Why do you need to lift...

Please help me refill my hot water tank.

How do you know the hot water tank is empty? The draw off is normally from the top so by turning on a tap you can't empty it, you get water out until the supply runs out then it stops flowing leaving the tank full.
