    Vertical crack Outbuilding

How long is the wall? You shouldn't technically need a movement joint unless it's over 6m. long but as you say the foundations are too shallow and on clay with trees in the vicinity. Time to call a structural engineer and then perhaps take legal advice. I wish you well on this one.

Time to retire my old hobby

A very good friend of mine's late father used to run the narrow gauge children's railway on Valley Road in Nottingham. He still has one engine which his father made from scratch. It's an incredible piece of work and a beauty to look at. I'd love to know how many hours it took to make. Must be...

Radiator Balancing - Drayton TRV4's - Some on flow, some on return...

Hi oldbuffer Thanks for the prompt reply and advice. Great idea about the black tape. I've done a cursory balance to within 11 deg although all I've done is replace radiators with a like for like size. In some instances, I've gone slightly larger but the old rads were just double panel, I've...

Radiator Balancing - Drayton TRV4's - Some on flow, some on return...

Hi, Been scratching my head on this one for a few days. I've just replaced all the rads in my house bar a few which I'll do later this week. System fully bled and it's running on an Intergas Rapid 32. What I cannot get my head around is this:- 1) I was looking for some cheap rad...

Preparation of Hardwall and Cement Lime Sand Render for skimming

Thanks for all the advice. Job turned out an absolute peach in the end. A bit long winded doing college style plumb, dot and screed but ultra accurate and I used an Ox Speedskim for the skim coat. Amazing piece of kit for a DIY'er.

Preparation of Hardwall and Cement Lime Sand Render for skimming

But you’re a pro! It is best to keep wetting it with a sprayer until it stops sucking or would you remedy it by applying a fee costs of 3:1 PVA/Water? I did a spray test on it the other day and it just keeps taking on water. I did got it to the point where it would take no more and it was...

Preparation of Hardwall and Cement Lime Sand Render for skimming

Hi I've just finished undercoating my kitchen internally using plumb, dot and screed method. I've experimented with both hardwall and cement:lime:sand render to get some experience of laying on. Hardwall goes on a dream. Cls is hard work compared. Anyway, it's been drying for the last 4 days...

    Preparation for Thermalite blockwork?

I was chatting with a mate who retired from plastering 20 years ago, he reckons a really weak mix of PVA is required to limit suction. Trouble is he didn't say how weak or how many coats? He did say hit it with a 2nd stronger mix but didn't say how strong! Read horror stories on the forum...

Plumb, clout nail and screed method? And what type of plaster to use.

or, cdbe, as bobasd says use a sheet of 4 x 8 ply but measure up the 8' edge, 3' and check the diagonal. It should be 5' (credit: Pythogoras' Theorem) if board edges are perfectly square (which they will probably be...)

Plumb, clout nail and screed method? And what type of plaster to use.

cdbe Thanks for the input. It looks as though I am going to have to give it a try. Yet another plasterer who had been recommended and who'd gone quiet called me back after missing my call yesterday. He sounded edgy on the phone after saying he now can't start for another 3 weeks and then...

Plumb, clout nail and screed method? And what type of plaster to use.

Thanks for your input. Sounds easier as you say but quite expensive for the kit. I need something a monkey, i.e. me, can do. I read about using the pine laths but can I find any to buy? I've also watched several videos online and then found that specialist plastering website showing clout...

Plumb, clout nail and screed method? And what type of plaster to use.

Hello New to forum but been reading up here and other articles about the plumb, dot and screed method of plastering. Read one article on another website (here:- https://specialistplastering.com/2016/03/14/dot-and-screed/ ) by a specialist plastering firm where they described using clout nails...

1860s lime plaster off - gypsum or line plaster new?

PS I used to get my plasterer to use Limelite renovating plaster for solid walls. I’ve just seen how expensive it is these days!!!! I’ve have thought a cement:lime:sand render would be the way to go. I’m sure an expert on here will be able to answer your question. This makes an interesting...

1860s lime plaster off - gypsum or line plaster new?

Can’t understand why on earth someone would quite £4000+ per room for like plaster unless the rooms are 5 metres high and 100 sq metres on plan. And that would work out at £20/sq.m still. Sounds like your plasterer doesn’t want the work! Or unless it’s Grade 1 with ornate plaster mouldings

Plumb, dot and screed - an alternative method?

Hello I'm new to the forum but have been reading many posts from it of late since my plasterer went and got himself a hernia so he is out of the loop for 4 months in reality. Now then! I know how difficult plastering is. It's a real art and I once tried a bit on a chimney breast a few years...
