Clearance for illuminated mirror above bathroom basin?

We are having one of those 18watt illuminated mirrors (Zone 2 rated it says) fitted over a bathroom handbasin. It has a pull cord about 5/6cm at centre of bottom edge. What is regulation safety clearance between bottom of mirror/lightbox and top of basin, please? (Mrs fiveminutejob says she...

I thought I'd posted my 'thank you', Thermo, but obviously not. Anyway, job done & thank you.

Suitable nails for making overlap fence panel

I have to make a matching fill-in fence panel about 28in wide x 6ft using standard overlap materials from local supplier - but they will not provide nails. So within the capped frame there will be 23 slats pinned to one central backing strut. What sort & what size of nails should I get to do...

    removing metal posts

Having struggled for ages trying to lever out the first of eight old wooden post & spikes firmly set in earth, not concreted, I simply poured some WATER down the sides of each spike (I'd already wiggled them around to create a bit of room). This provided sufficient lubrication to help each one...

Stuck toilet cistern lid Ideal Std Studio

Steady's advice was spot on - just prised out the two buttons to reveal the plastic screw. NOW, all I need is some advice re blue stuff in view of comment from Softus. Mrs fmj has bought some Jeyes Bloo Max in a wrapper to drop in cistern. The packet says it's safe - foams, cleans, freshens...

Stuck toilet cistern lid Ideal Std Studio

Thanks Steady & Paul. Glad I asked. I never would have figured it out without brute force first. Reason for opening it is so Mrs fiveminutejob can drop one of those blue toilet freshener thingies into cistern. Your help is appreciated. Thanks very much.

Stuck toilet cistern lid Ideal Std Studio

This should be easy, I hope! Ideal Standard Studio close couple toilet with dual flush. I'm having a prob getting the cistern lid off. Outer chrome ring around the twin flush buttons will lift up about half an inch or so, and twist slightly either way, but no further. I don't want to force it...

Electroheat Amptec Electric boiler - no CHtg

Htg engineer visited today and checked PCB operation by trying it with 2 new ones. Left working ok. Intermittent problem on calling for heat. Takes 3 full minutes from switch on at the Honeywell CM67 timer on wall to production of any heat in the Amptec unit - is this normal?). Engr suggested...

Electroheat Amptec Electric boiler - no CHtg

ChrisR - Thanks for rapid reply and illustration (of pump I presume). I'll check when I go over there today. I guess I should hear some initial noise as it kicks in - the 'whoosh' as my daughter calls it. Would failure of that component have any bearing on "PCB cables to elements burning out"...

Electroheat Amptec Electric boiler - no CHtg

18 months ago, my daughter moved to a block of flats built about 4 years ago. HW and CH is via an Electroheat Amptec C900 electric boiler (fitted as standard, I believe). Hers is in a hallway cupboard linked to an Oso hotwater cylinder. Cylinder is about 4/5 feet tall with a red (expansion?)...

    Service intervals for Gas Boilers

Thanks for all comments. Since my first post, BG have still not written to confirm what they told me on phone - that a two year interval is safe - because their contract intervals allow that long. Does not fill me with confidence. As soon as their service is done I will look elsewhere.

    Service intervals for Gas Boilers

Thanks also to ollgi and agile for speedy comments. Looks like I will go for a Vaillant contract and ditch BG. Thanks again to all who freely contribute their advice to this site.

    Service intervals for Gas Boilers

Thanks both for your speedy replies. Appreciated. I do know that Vaillant offer an annual service contract (and BG in January 2004 were going to call them out as a last resort anyway), so should I just cancel BG contract and sign up with Vaillant?

    Service intervals for Gas Boilers

Can anyone advise on the recommended safe intervals for servicing domestic gas boilers? In early January 2004 we took out an annual boiler maintenence contract with British Gas as we were having a problem with our Vaillant Thermocompact, just days out of its warranty period. BG took 2 weeks...

    Sealed CH drain-down puzzler

Thanks very much cc. Armed with all your helpful responses, I guess a full drain down is the next step. (This is a great site - so much knowledge and experience willingly shared. Thanks to all.)

    Sealed CH drain-down puzzler

Thanks Chris. Yes there is a 'normal' hw cylinder in cupboard on landing with a single tank in loft above it. If water was coming from cylinder, I would have expected it to show at drain hose outside. But when hose is dry, hall rad is still topping up. I'm wondering now if the pipework to the...

    Sealed CH drain-down puzzler

Thanks Bamber. I have tried to do exactly that - isolating hall rad and draining it but it keeps topping itself up. Only kitchen rad has a drain cock. I thought that would drain down all pipework, just leaving water in shut off rads. That's why I'm puzzled.

    Sealed CH drain-down puzzler

I want to replace a downstairs radiator in hall, needing small adjustments to pipes at each end for new one - so valves will have to come off. (Rads have been extended at different times ; now connected to a newish Vaillant Thermocompact sealed system boiler hanging on integral garage wall)...
