The handle has separated from the spindle. The spindle has rounded (although the handle is square). Is there an adhesive I could use to fix the handle. It's impossible for me to turn the water supply off to renew it at this time.

Many thanks for all the help, could not get the push button to unscrew and was afraid of breaking it so I cheated and took the cistern off the toilet, cut off the the chewed bit of plastic thread filed it square, put on the new tap connector, put the cistern back onto the toilet connected...

Is there no nut on the inside like the older cisterns? If I undo this nut the plastic screw thread will just drop out? if it will that would solve all the problems I think.

and also like advised change the whole fillvalve, the nut for that is on the ouside where it holds it in place and where the connection for the cold water goes, What happens when you undo this nut?
