    dry/mixed concrete bags opinions

I used postcrete once, ages ago and wasn't too impressed. Seemed a bit lightweight and not many stones. Also, too many mixed opinions on it and too many methods. Is there a best way or tried and trusted method? Is it any better than a bag of concrete? Might be worth trying it out on one, but not...

    dry/mixed concrete bags opinions

Hello everyone, I'm looking to put up 7 metal posts (palisade, security kind) and have my holes dug - 25cm square, 50cm deep. I'm thinking of what I can use to concrete them in and would prefer something I can buy dry mixed in bags and only water and mixing is needed. Don't fancy using...

Can I place sand under grass?

It says on the bags of Hansons silver sand that it can be used to top dress lawns. Does top dressing have nothing to do with drainage? I thought it meant just spreading it on top. What does silver sand do for lawns? Must have some use.

Can I place sand under grass?

Interesting thread and I have a few lawn questions that have been on my mind all summer, so hopefully you wise chaps can throw some advice my way: I have a heavy waterlogged/clay lawn with a high water table. It never fully dries out, even in full sun and is always covered in moss and dead...

How to install metal palisade fence posts - advice needed

What would people recommend is best for holding these metal posts firmly in the ground - postcrete or concrete. I was thinking about postcrete originally, but it turns out I have 3 left over bags of Wickes mixed concrete, eft over from the summer. I think a bag might do a hole. Should I buy more...

How to install metal palisade fence posts - advice needed

That might be tricky with metal palisade posts, particularly with 3 sets of wires between 4 posts. That's why I thought a single rail across the middle of each pair of supports might do the trick. It would keep the posts apart and straight for when I'm concreting the posts in. Instead of a metal...

How to install metal palisade fence posts - advice needed

Ok. Thanks for the advice. It's not a massive job, but then I'm not a massive bloke! I suppose I was fearing the prospect of 10, but you've got me all fired up to at least try one. I'll go for an inconspicuous one in the far corner in case I need to abort quick sharp....then I'm off down the...

How to install metal palisade fence posts - advice needed

That sounds good me. Thanks. Better yet it sounds do-able by me!! I was thinking of maybe putting in some sort of rail between the posts to keep them straight and braced, and not allow my wires to pull on the posts when I tension them. How wide are the rails that actual palisade panels use? Can...

How to install metal palisade fence posts - advice needed

Hello folks, I am attempting to divide a section of my garden off from the rest by means of a fruiting bush screen. It will need some fence posts, so I can attach wires and grow the screen up them. It needs to be strong and able to support them, especially when they put on wieight when covered...

nightlatch barrel bar too short - question

It does wobble, but seems to be held in by something and I can't figure out how (unless their is some kind of weld inside the barrel.) I've got these pictures -

nightlatch barrel bar too short - question

Had a look at the cylinder and can't see a pin. The bar looks like it's stuck in it. The was a screw that went from the back plate and into the barrel, but that's it. The bar was cut to 20mm long. Do you know how long they are originally? I need one at least 50mm long. I don't mind buying a new...

nightlatch barrel bar too short - question

Yes, it is a Yale and it looks like this, but grey. Here's a link: http://www.yale.co.uk/en/yale/couk/productsdb/nightlatches/p1--p2-double-locking-nightlatch/ The problem I have is the barrel bar was cut for the previous cladding, so is short. However, I have added extra thick, new cladding...

nightlatch barrel bar too short - question

Hello, I'm currently replacing the cladding on my garage door and have removed the barrel of my nightlatch, but have a problem. The new cladding is thicker than the old one and the barrel bar is now too short. Is the only solution a new barrel? One issue I have is the nightlatch is a doubled...

extending a garden tap to end of garden

sorry to have to come back to this, but need a bit of advice (please, please!) I am going to do what scbk suggested The thing I am unsure about is the diameter of the pipe. I mentioned this before, but nobody addressed the specific point. I'm stumped over it and need help. Are wider...

which angle grinder to sharpen mower blade?

Thanks John. I have a few old tools with rounded, blunt and chipped edges and thought I could have a bash at improving them. Some of the tools have a bit of a sentimental value and whilst they don't work perfectly, they're still good for a few more years. I have an angle grinder and have...

which angle grinder to sharpen mower blade?

hello folks, I've been given an old cylinder mower with a worn out rusty blade, and was wondering if I could use my angle grinder (small one, can't remember size details) to sharpen the blades. The thing is I've only ever used it to cut stone and metal, but not to sharpen anything. Could...

extending a garden tap to end of garden

said I was a novice didn't I? All sounds like a load of hassle and I'm tending towards your view of getting a decent long hose. Apparently, Tricoflex is the one to go for. Are wider hoses better at delivering more water? If my tap is coming off a standard 15mm water pipe, then will it make a...

extending a garden tap to end of garden

Thanks. Firstly, I'm a DIY novice and not very technical, so excuse my ignorance  Currently, I have a tap that appears to be coming off a 15mm pipe that goes from the downstairs cloakroom room sink, via a washing machine and out through the wall. There's a copper tap screwed to the...

extending a garden tap to end of garden

I currently have a garden tap (15mm copper pipe) just outside the back door and was wondering how to extend it to the other end of the garden. My situation is - all the plants that need regular watering and the greenhouse are around 30m away from my garden tap, on the other end of my garden. I...

fixing baton to concrete fence post

I like your idea of cable tie through notches, but how about just strapping the batten permanently. Wonder if there is some kind of strapping I could use, like a jubilee clip or metal screw/bolt tightening strap. I could just drill three small holes into the edge of the fence panel right next to...
