tomato plant - pinching out side shoots?

hi folks, I tried growing tomatoes last year and ended up with few tomatoes, but plenty of lush green foliage. This year I read up a bit on the subject and kept coming across the term - "pin out side shoots." what exactly does this mean - remove everything coming out the side from the central...

    kitchen sink cabinet size

many thanks for your help. while on the subject -any opinions on the what to look for in a new kitchen sink? Is brand, thickness (if steel) or material an important issue? What do people think of those composite/granite-looking types? I'm after an inset, single sink with drainer and as...

    kitchen sink cabinet size

hope this is the right forum, but I've got a query regarding kitchen sinks and the size of cabinets they need beneath them. I'm currently designing a layout and noticed most inset sinks say they require a 600mm cabinet. I was wondering if this meant they HAD to have a 600mm only, or could I put...

    planting suggestions for unsightly wall

thanks lorena. Now I have some other names to go on i'll definitely look into those. symptoms - sounds like you've had a real battle with your wisteria - fortunately, it also sounds like you won! Any tips for soil/ conditions: I'm going to be planting it where it will get direct sun for...

    planting suggestions for unsightly wall

Both are great plants, particularly sempervivum (one of my favourites - but I tend to grow it in pots.) Not sure how to grow it "in" a wall. There are no great holes and I certainly don't want to make any. I'm sure that would be asking for trouble with this wall! Wisteria - The ting am...

    garden furniture wood splitting

I really think i need to get a camera, as my powers of description aren't up to much and a picture is worth a 1000 words (my long winded descriptions!) Anyway, the splits are along the grain (always down the verticals) and are a few mm wide and don't appear that deep. So will a screw across...

    garden furniture wood splitting

I've noticed that some of the timbers on my arbour and arch are splitting. It's mostly on the vertical pillars - around 10cm square - where cracks have formed. They are not down the full length of wood, just sections of around 1-2 ft in length. How can prevent further splitting, or the cracks...

    planting suggestions for unsightly wall

Ivy - the brickwork is structually sound. The problem is frost has damaged the outer surface so it is crumbly in parts. On some bricks 5mm deep patches have fallen off so it looks a bit messy. I planned to seal these areas with some kind of sealant (don't know what) and then grow something over...

    planting suggestions for unsightly wall

that may be true, but it's a bit unfair. I know the ivy is a better prospect, but my only worry is wrecking the already shakey wall. Is there a kind of ivy (ie. clingy and vigorous) but not likely to damage a the brickwork of an old wall? I wonder if I could strengthen the wall by painting it...

    gas oven advice needed

I thought as much, as there was originally a stand alone cooker/hob with a hose connection that the fitter converted to just the hob. At least I know I won''t have to shell out for a lot of new piping. Hopefully, being a smaller job ,means I'll save a bit which I can put towards the new oven...

    gas oven advice needed

not sure if this the right place to post a gas query... sorry if it isn't. Anyway, We have a gas hob and built in electric oven. We plan to get a new oven and I was thinking about moving from electric to gas. Now the thing is, there is a gas pipe (15mm) that used to go to a standard cooker...

    planting suggestions for unsightly wall

thanks for the replies. I should have made clear, it's only knee height and retains soil on one side (where i want to plant, and a paved drive on the other. Should also have mentioned it was at the front of the house. Hence the idea to drape something over, as opposed to growing in front (can't...

    planting suggestions for unsightly wall

I have a dwarf wall approx. 30cm tall that curves around a border in a u-shape. It's a retaining wall so needs to be there, but it looks old and has a lot of small areas od damage (frost damage i think.) I was thinking of planting something behind it and then trying to drape it over the wall and...

    tree stump query

Not wanting to sound tight, but rather not have to spend any real money on the job. Well, for one, the stump is at the back of the garden and not too accessible. Also, It's a huge stump, and I imagine quite deep. I was more thinking of a way to get it to be flat to ground level, preferably by...

    cooker hood positioning problem

The flat roof is single story (about 50cm I think.) Didn't want to enter the utility room because there is a lot of piping (water, CH) in there. I didn't draw it in, but there is a garage behind the utility romm as well. The dark lines I drew seemed to be the obvious routes to me. I'm just...

    cooker hood positioning problem

Got a bit of a problem with siting a cooker hood. The problem is there are no outside walls near to the cooker and I don't want to rearrange the kitchen. I was thinking or getting a hood that recirculated the air, but I 'd rather have one that extracted. I've put together a diagram showing the...

    tree stump query

forgot to mention, I think the stump is dead. There have been no shoots coming from it for 2 years, and it leaked sap for a month after it was cut down.
