    BAXI coal fire back boiler

Is this the type with the recessed ash tray under the grate? We had one like that very many years ago. The rod and ring is possibly the flue damper, in one position the fire gases go up the front of the boiler (more heat into the room) and in the other position the gases are directed through and...

Do I Need To Use Jointing Compound On Compression Olives?

If everything were perfect then perhaps the answer is no. But as the olives are, in all probability, produced by an automatic lathe skimming them to the approximate profile at its fastest speed, then I would say use a few turns of ptfe tape, or a jointing compound if you wish, on the joint...

What mastic to use to fit bathroom sink please?

If you're bedding the sink on a laminate worktop then be careful as the silicone will slightly dull the surface of the laminate where it toches it. I think it's the acetic acid or something similar in the sealant. I never know whether to wipe the excess immediately and have a neat joint and a...

    waterproofing showers

A lot of questions here, but to the original how to fill the gap, I should use expanding foam (trim excess when dry). It will get down into the gap to make a good seal, it sticks to just about everything and it's waterproof. I don't know what the wall is made of nor what the shape of the shower...

removing dried expanding foam filler from hands

Well I'll be da**ed. Someone has pinched the word 'remover' whch should have followed 'nail varnish' from my previous post. You just can't trust anyone these days. My nails are the reason why gloves were invented.

Cold water tank in the loft

Is the tank at 'floor' level or is it raised? If raised then don't insulate under the tank - if not raised too far you could take the insulation up in the form of a box to meet the tank, if you see what I mean. The idea is that some heat from the house will rise to keep the tank above freezing...

Is this right? Sealing (or not) frames to brickwork?

If you don't seal then rain, snow, wind, dust, insects and vegetation can, and probably will, come into the room. If you do seal then you lose natural ventilation, but the whole point of windows is to stop natural ventilation (that's an attempt at humour, there is no advantage from not sealing)...

removing dried expanding foam filler from hands

I used nail varnish on my hands last Sunday. I had to use talc to stop my fingers adhereing to themselves and everything else. I ended up with what appeared to be a latex glove very firmly bonded to my hands. Friday night, back from the pub, it's just about wearing off. This stuff sticks.

    Standby Plug for TV ?

I seem to remember when these plugs were touted on Dragons' Den that the device had some sort of electrical storage device (capacitor? I'm no expert) which was charged when the TV was on and then powered the TV in standby mode when it was off. Not only do you not get anything for free, but that...

    Granite imperfection question

Unfortunately I don't think that this is correct or 'natural'. In my opinion the surfaces should be dead billiard-table flat, as near as wotsit. You will have trouble with things standing on it, liquids collecting in it, and the eternal sight of it. It isn't natural, granite doesn't come out...

    Keiro satnav?

Yes, I'm totally confused. The TT GO 730 has excellent reviews in PC World but some really bad reviews on Amazon. I was in a relative's car travelling from Ludlow to Kidderminster a few weeks ago and asked to see what the satnav says (can't remember the make, a basic device). It promptly, and...

    Keiro satnav?

Thanks for that, F. I'm veering towards the TT GO 730 which has lane guidance and some excellent reviews (it is primarily for the spouse who's not so good on maps nor online/tinkering). Halfords have them at the moment for £199 so it's probably worth the extra £50 or so for something that is...

TomTom but which one help please

The 3.5" screens seem very fiddly to touch, my fingers were hopeless on the pseudo keyboard on a TT, and that was standing in the shop. Do the larger 4.3" screens tend to have correspondingly larger keyboards? PS The metric system does not seem to have reached satnavs.

TomTom but which one help please

My problem too, as the spouse wants one (I don't, I'm not too impressed with the efforts of other people's kit). I found the Kiero FS900 on ebay which looks good and has europe too, but haven't shelled out the necessary £120 or so yet. It's too new for many reports, but the alternative is a £250...

Back in the mists of time - one for all you old C/H experts

Unfortunately I too am an old-timer. When I had a house built in 1970 I was pleased that the chimney was lined with salt-glazed pipes - it meant that I wouldn't have to have it lined when the inset gas boiler was fitted. I seem to remember that s/g pipes were an acceptable method of lining a...

    hole in the worktop

We can assume that the washbasin has a flat bottom that fits flush on the surface of the worktop, and the worktop is laminate? Three or four years ago I was saddled with a circular (semi-spherical) ceramic washbowl sitting on a laminate worktop (not my choice, but there you go). There was no...

    Keiro satnav?

Hi, Anyone have any experience with Keiro FS900 satnav? They are sold on Amazon for £250 and also on Ebay at £150. They seem to have the best reviews of all, but you never know who's writing these reviews. (My spouse wants a satnav, I can't be bothered to be honest.) Failing that, the...

How do you replace an outdoor security light BULB?

Anything from around £1.75 in Wilcos to three or four quid elsewhere.

How do you replace an outdoor security light BULB?

Replaceing these bulbs can be a devil, as you have to push the bulb back hard into one of the holders to release the other side. They can be very stiff with corrosion and gunge. I've broken a new bulb before trying to fit these things.

Will tiles crack on floor joint?

I had a similar worry about 2.5 years ago - original concrete half floor with new concrete slab (and a crap job the builder did too, I wish I'd done it myself). Anyway I asked the tiler to use flexible tiling cement across the joint. It was gvery expensive, but there's no crack yet. I think...
